Hip pain

I have developed a pain in my hip about 3 days ago.  It feels like it is in the bone, not muscular, and more on the outside of the leg, not down the back or front.  It's difficult to walk.  I'm 38/48 this week.  Just wondering if anyone knows if PegIntron, Riba and/or Procrit can cause destruction of the bones or joints (hip joints, that is!)  

Hope all had a good weekend.  Tampa survived another glancing blow, but I believe the State of Florida has had it's fill of hurricanes for the next 100 years.

a bone density test will determine if there is a loss. an MRI will tell if there is nerve involvement. I was getting a hip/buttock pain that radiated to the calf. it turned out to be a herniated disc pinching the nerve. I read that the disc is 80% water and needs to be well hydrated, so then I wondered if the drying effect of the meds can make it to  progress to herniation and dessication (desiccation)...
check the web for sciatica, see if the symptoms match.

Thanks for responses.  Cuteus - it's definitely not sciatica as the pain goes down the outside of my leg.  It is my understanding that sciatica starts in the butt and goes down the back of the leg.  This is definitely on the outside of the leg.

I have appt w/GI in ten days.  I'll see if he can order a bone density test for me.  Jeez - just when I was looking foward to only having 10 more weeks to go, now I have to worry about having a hip replacement!  Well, I know this for sure - if I have to have a hip replacement, I'm going to get them to shave about 10 pounds of fat off while they are in there messing around!

I also about a month ago developed a pain that shot down my leg and many years ago,,,,I had been in a car wreck and a plate was put in that leg but I decided the meds were probably activating it somewhat. It was getting to where it was hard to walk some mornings on that leg but the pain finally left and haven't had it again.  Could it also be the procrit you are injecting now ,,,,because it does list bone pain as a symptom and wondering if that would be about time you started?  Damn these meds!! LOL  Hope you get better soon!!

mine was always on the side of the leg, never the back. I hate those lists of symptoms sometimes....gggrrr.

Sounds like Trochanteric bursitis.I have it and it comes and goes.  Sleeping on the side that hurts, a lot of walking or even stairs can aggravate it. This is a condition affecting the side -- or lateral aspect -- of the hip. Although trochanteric bursitis usually affects middle-aged or elderly persons, women more often than men, it can develop in younger people also.  As in other forms of bursitis, there is swelling in the bursa causing pain and inflammation.

Hi there, although I'm really happy to learn you have survived natures wrath, I am sorry to read of your hip pain.  I haven't experienced that sx, although sometimes my hip joints can feel a little stiff after sitting at my desk for a while but as soon as I start moving around I'm fine and experience no further discomfort?   Now I'm wondering what other sx I might be experiencing but ignoring?

Glad to hear you made it thru the last storm. I had part of a tree drop on my house, minor damage to the house but after chainsawing the darn thing I was beat. When I started I was in my 40's and by the time I was thru I was at least 90. :-)

How strange about the hip pain, I started having hip pain in my right hip a couple of weeks ago.I had no ideal if this was relate to tx but I did wonder, Of course I wonder about anything being a sx nowadays, lol.

I'll have to ask my doc at my next appt. if this possibly tx related. Anyway best wishes and here's hoping: No More Hurricanes!!!!!!!

As far as the Tx is concerned, I often think of it in terms of  MEDS being a POTENT ACID & our BODIES being a DELICATE SUBSTRATE. The acid eats thru everything given enough time!

I started experiencing right hip/joint pain about mid way through my 48 weeks, and the pain/ache came and went....by the last month, it "camped out" and I had it every day.  About one month after completing tx, my hip stopped hurting, and I have not had any problems since.   I did experience some bone loss (this had been my 3rd tx) and I am now on Fosamax for building bone density and halting further loss.....but I do weight bearing exercises and take calcium too.  I would still talk with your doc.   Good luck

I did some research on this subject when I was experiencing hip pain on tx.  I found many articles refering to use of interferon for some types of bone loss, not causing it.  However, I found numerous articles that related ribivirin to bone loss, particularly in post-menopausal women (like me).  I had a Dexa scan, a bone density scan, 4 months post-tx to check on this and found that I had no loss during tx, thank God.  I was lucky.

Yep, sounds like bursitis.  Had it. Wasn't treatment related when I had it the first time.  But when it came back for awhile during Tx, I thought it was probably because I was having all sorts of inflammatory responses happening.

Now that you mention it.... During my first round of tx (pegintron)I had that same exact pain in my right hip  almost daily (walked around with my hand pressed to my hip all the time.)

After finishing tx it went right away. Now I am on pegasys and have not had that particular side effect(many others but not the hip pain) I am pretty confident that yours will go away too upon completion of tx. Good luck, I'll be praying for you. I know first hand how much pain that can be.
