ITP and cirrhosis due to Hepatitis C
Male 46, hepatitis C, recently diagnosed with cirrhosis, has been suffering ITP for over 3 months, platelets do not go upper than 10.000. Biopsy says portal fibrosis. Also, has active hepatitis with a level of 1.500.000 yes, you read correct. Impossible to treat hepatitis c due to low platelets. Question is, what is there to do? how can these platelets go up so he can be treated? no drinking, taking good care of his health. Jaundiced since 5 days ago, very weak, bruising very much. Is there hope?
i have had itp for several years and plt's never go above 60 on a good day, since starting treatment they have hovered around 40-50. this did not stop me from treating 31/48 so far.
however my hematologist and hepatologist work closely together,
( i also have leukeami being treated by the hemotologist)
i didnt have to go on procrit till around week 20.
i have not noticed any change in pltt's while on procrit.
they are still between 40-50.
you do have to be carefull when plts start getting down around 70-80 as your clotting factor is seriously compromised.
another thing to look out for is megaspleen as itp will effect
the spleen and so does treatment, after i finish treatment and recover a bit from sides am looking at haveing spleen taken out
as it has pushed left kidney over about 1.5 inches according to ultra sound.
the gist is the itp hasnt stopped me from treating just make sure hemotoligst and hepc doc work together.
