It WORKED! Cure for the Mouth Bumps!

OK those horrible mouth sores are caused by the IFN.  My GI was mystified and wanted me to go to an ENT. INstead I asked at Dr. Js office and they knew IMMEDIATLEY what they were.  They said they had a patient who had them so bad that he had to STOP treatment.

They are VERY common and caused by the IFN (I thought it was the Riba)

They told me to mix equal parts of Malox and Children's Liquid Benedryl and put it on the tongue with a q-tip.  Since I have tried every single thing on the market I didn't have much hope at all.

I did it for two days.  The sores that would NOT go away, even putting on straight peroxide, are GONE.

Been gone for a week!  I didn't want to post until I was SURE but adios.......

And the total cost ended up being less than $10.  I can't BELIEVE what expensive things I tried in the past.

so if you have them...DO IT they will be GONE!

Weight fluctuation (gain 20, lose 10, regain 15 back and forth, etc) can be a symptom of having Hep C so you might see some of that stop after treatment. I read once in a list of symptoms "unexplained weight loss and gain" was a symptom.

I did my height and weight in that calculator a few months ago before I dropped the weight and it said my BMI was 26(not in the desirable range) and in the "category" box it said "Prone to Health Risks" Yikes! Suprised me. I got the weight off and now my BMI is 24 (desirable range) and the category comes up "desirable" now instead of prone to health risks.

I sure don't look desirable at this point! lol

Good morning,
About how long after using did you see and improvement. How often did you do this? Same thing happened to hubby. Asked GI about a sore in his mouth. He doesn't know anything of course, told to go see PCP. Pcp tries some antibotics then sends him to an ENT who does not seem to know anything about hep tx but gives him more antibotics and says that if it doesn't clear to come back for a biopsy. Of course hubby is rushing to do that-not. We think it is probably from tx but no one seems to know anything.

Thanks for the tip of Malox and benedryl.  I still have a persistant sore in my mouth that will not go away and it's been 3 weeks since I left treatment.

Congratulations again on your UND!

I have the same problem - completely totally dehydrated shoe leather tongue that you literally can't even move.

I found if I wake up alot and actually take a swig of water and let it SOAK on the back of my tongue (not drink it down) it helps.  I swear to GOD I can hear crackling noises when I do it...like it's seeping in or something.  It's the most bizarre thing in the world.

But it does work for me...as long as I wake up and drink that is.

Who would figure we'd have so many different, strange problems to deal with that the doctors never ever mention as "sides".

Thank God for the forum or I would have lost my mind thinking I was a hypochondriac by now for sure.

Must have been posting when you were.

I don't know...but I will be getting the bill at home (I forgot my medical card since I knew I had to pay cash...just wasn't thinking) and it should probably refer to it somewhere on there.

They just said "TMA" - at the time I didn't even know what it was.  Took a week to get the results and that is really all that I know.  They didn't mention Quest or Bayer I would remember that and I never thought to ask.

But I'll try to find out, asap :)

Just tell them to fax you a copy of the labs for your records -- but hey -- that's YOUR advice. LOL.

When I first came to this sight in 2002 there wasn't the body of information accessible to us that exists today. And since treatment with pegylated interferon didn't have much history we patients really didn't have a clue as to what was going on and why. I don't remember much discussion about sore mouth back then. I have mentioned that HbA1c test results can be unrealistically low due to RBC premature destruction from ribavirin/interferon. I couldn't find a thing about this back when I knew that a result of 2.8 couldn't be right so I guessed at the reason and ran it by my doctors and they agreed that was probably the cause. It was like that with a lot of the things we now take for granted. I never got an answer as to why my tongue was so sore so I just endured it and hoped it would resolve with discontinuation of TX. It's a whole lot better now because it's true that misery loves company and it is a great relief to know that you're not the only one with the problem and that the problem is caused by treatment. Quest's Qual TMA takes about a week...Heptimax takes longer, at least it did for me.

You won't find "Bayer Versant" on the lab report but if it's the test I'm thinking it may be, you will see
"HCV RNA, QL, TMA" or something similar.

Also, under "Lab" -- all the way to the right, you will see "QNI" which stands for the Quest Nichol's Institute. I believe that's where this particular test is run, regardless of where the blood is drawn.

Since you mentioned your VL was negative to <5 IU/ml, I'm guessing he might be using Quest labs. They have two tests using TMA technology that go down to 5 IU/ml.

One is Heptimax, and the other is their HCV RNA Qualitative TMA, the latter of which uses the Bayer Versant technology. I used to use Heptimax during tx, but lately have started to use their Qualitative for my post tx Viral Loads.

Do you happen to know which test he gave you. Thanks.

Hi there, hope everthing is going well. I have a long history of having fever blisters and canker sores all thru my life. I am  43 years old. When I started treatment they flared up three times thru my 14 weeks of treatment. Mouth has not been so bad now for about three weeks.I was told to take a supplement called lysine 1000mg. I feel it helped me manage the promblem prior to treatment but now that I'm on treatment I wonder If the lysine is beneficial or not or interferring with the treatment drugs. I had 4 log drop in 4weeks. Have a great day.

I wonder If the lysine is beneficial or not or interferring with the treatment drugs.

That's why he have to be careful about EVERY SINGLE THING we take.  You ever notice how many new drugs have liver precautions attached at the end of commercials?  JUst about all of them.

Scary stuff. I don't want anything to interfere with treatment. After doing 47 weeks so far...out of 72...I don't want to have to do this ever again.

I can't find the post where you stated your height and weight, I meant to put this there, sorry!
I found this and was suprised at the results I got. I also found it very informative in other ways so I wanted to share it with you. You type in your height and weight and it gives you a result. Good luck with the doctors' visit and keep us posted as to what he/she says.

Hello there!   I saw somewhere where it was mentioned that you are now stage 4.  I thought you were stage 3.  When did it change or am I just getting everyone mixed up?

I am amazed how we manage to keep each others stats straight at all! No I was ot stage 3 I was the one the doc said sie there is "no evidene of damage" ad I ws treating I didnt need a biopsy so I didnt know my stage/grade. I finally convinced him to do a CT scan a oupe weeks ago and that is how I found the cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can offer up ZERO clues to the doctor in may cases unfortunately and in addition, if you are geno 2 or 3 and planning to treat biopsies are not usually done by many doctors. Biopsies are always reommended with geno 1. I want that changed! I think ALL genos need a biopsy and they need to advise people accordingly. But no one listens to me LOL
FInding out didnt change anythig I am doing exactly what I would/should be doing knowing what I know now, but it was a real shocker. ike my doc said "sometimes ignorance is bliss" now I know and the only thing it changed is my fear level which went up quite a few nothes!

My problem was with my tongue. When I'd awaken in the morning it felt like cardboard - it was so rough and sore - maybe leather is a better description. Nothing helped me and I doubt that they were herpes related because there really weren't any specific sores - my entire tongue was the sore. Mike

God they were SO SO BAD I could only eat ice cream and fudgicles...that is where that came from.  Now they are just gone...my tongue looks totally NORMAL! I felt like a leper with them (I mean nobody but me could see them but you know) and with this disease God knows we don't need to be made feel any more like that than we already do!

And they (doc and the PA) knew what they were immediately.  I had forgotten that when it comes to things like THAT my GI is really crappy (like when I dropped to 9 and he said I needed a chest xray cause I was out of breath LOL).

It always pays to ask another doctor when you have a problem that you aren't getting good advice on.

I've never even had a cold sore in my life...but the idea that they could be a herpes complex type thing and lowered resistance - makes sense.  I mean they have to be SOMETHING since so many of us get them.

I was just so glad to find a cheap cure.

First, congratulations on being non-detectible to <5 and good luck with the rest of yout tx.

A quick google on mouth sores and the tx you suggest comes up with this: http://tinyurl.com/hlm7w

I also had some mouth sores during tx and as the article suggests they appeared to be herpes-type canker sores. My feeling was that the interferon had lowered my resistance during tx and therfore the sores. (I used a non-alcohol mouth wash and luckily they went away in time).

If this is the case -- herpes types canker sores -- and the benadryl/maalox mix only brings temporary relief -- you might ask your doctor about some of those oral antivirals. I used to use them prior to tx whenever I got a bad fever blister -- although you would think that ribavirin would be exerting a strong antiviral effect but maybe a different family of antivirals.

I had them so bad that I couldn't even think about eating a saltine cracker. Salt was out and my love of spicy foods was a thing of the past. I never found anything that helped much. I feel for you because I truly suffered through it. Mike
