I keep seeing all these herbs, juices, chemicals... Is there a real concensus to what is really important during treatment other than that syringe and pill bottle? Im not being sarcastic... I mean really... What things a proven to help in the treatment?? This is a situation that calls for "faith", a time when we are most vunerable to be taken advantage of... But I am really interested in medically important things to worry about doing along the way...
There is some conjecture right now among researchers that milk thistle/silymarin might have some benefit both as an adjunct to better liver histology as well as containing antiviral properties. Even that product has both it’s supporters as well as its detractors.
Outside of that, the acceptable data gets pretty sketchy. Regarding complementary and alternative medicine, if a patient clears the products with their doctor in advance, can afford them and understands their limitations, it probably wouldn’t hurt to explore them. Outside of that, I’d stay clear of sticks, bark and berries.
All that said, we do need to continue looking at them from a research angle; so much of our current pharmacopoeia has been derived from plant sources. Seems to me it’s better to leave that to research and out of the clinical environment until proven though.
