My AST/ALT Levels? What do they mean?

I reaceived my results for my Comprehensive Metabolic Panel...

My AST = 83 (normal being 5-45)
My ALT = 82 (normal being 7-60)

Do I need to be worried?
I have people telling me to go to the hospital, and my doctor had not said anything.

Your liver enzymes are elevated so there should be some follow-up tests to determine the source of the elevation. One source can be hepatitis, but there are many others.

I don't believe this is the sort of issue that requires you to go to the hospital. But I do think you should have follow-up tests. I would be surprised if your doctor did not order some. If he really doesn't take the elevations seriously, you may need to switch doctors, since it's important to find out the cause of the elevations.

Unless you have something else immediately wrong, there’s no reason to consider this an emergency. Your liver enzymes are mildly elevated; an appointment with a primary care doctor is in order. Who initiated the test? And for what purpose? Many things can cause this; for instance alcoholic beverages can elevate liver enzymes, as well host of other things.  No need to panic- they are telling you something may need attention.

Best of luck to you—
