On Lactoferrin

HR mentioned studies on Lactoferrin on pubmed at:
http://tinyurl.com/2pmpre

Seems that it started out looking promising, then it looked like a pipe dream, but the latest study shows alot of promise again. I may add this to my regimen. Anyone have any experience with this supplement?

I am new to this site and only joined to comment. I am currently experimenting with Monolaurin and Lactoferrin together and Chinese immune booster herbs. I found a discussion on a site where l Lady said she had hep c for over 30 yrs She was advised to take the following by her health advisor.
Quercitin 500mg
Monolaurin 500mg
Lactoferrin 750 mg
All three times daily, maximum Monolaurin a day 2,400mg.
She said after 8months she no longer had the virus in her blood. When I studied the affects of Monolaurin and Lactoferrin I realised this made complete sense. Removal of the fatty shield (which the virus uses to not be recognised by the immune system) When the virus is exposed, have an amazing back up for the immune system, should follow that you will be able to shift it. This is my second month, I have been taking.
Monolaurin 600mg X 3
Lactoferrin 600mg X 3
Chinese herbs
Bee propollis X 2
3-6 grams of Vit C daily.

I have so far noticed symptoms of severe fatigue during the first month, this would make sense as there was more active virus in my system due to being exposed.
Previous to starting this experiment I had little fatigue symptoms, the virus being kept under control by Chinese herbs and acupunture.
After all these years of managing my symptoms with early stage cirrhosis (1998) I Just want rid of it as I am aware the continual swelling has caused and will cause more dying liver cells.
So this is the start of my 2nd month. I will let you know how I get on. It is very costly as both products are not available directly form the UK, or they are exorbitantly priced because they have had to import.
One thing I have read is the apocolactoferrin is the best due to it's iron distribution, it starves the virus of the iron it needs to reproduce.
I also think the Japanese experiment used a lot of Lactoferrin, your body does need time to adjust, or maybe it's just a case of little is more.

it is hard to say if you could buy camels lactoferrin here, even if it would say so on the label.

The serious human lactoferrin clinical HCV trials have been conducted in Japan. From these one could conclude that it might be an interesting harmless addition once UND state is reached, since it seems to supress viral entry ( which could reduce reinfect rate), but the longer term trials seem to show that the virus eventually gets resistant to it/adapts to it and then the effect is gone.

Lactoferring human clinical studies re HCV have also been presented on past AASLD meetings , and seemed to show at least clear short term benefit in term of reducing VL.  At a low VL,  resistance could not appear, and it might show its benefits best in this setting, particularly in patients that have never used it before,  although I am not aware of trials using this approach ( late entry of Lactioferrin.)

Here is the in vitro camel LF study:

J Immunoassay Immunochem. 2007;28(3):267-77.

Camel lactoferrin markedly inhibits hepatitis C virus genotype 4 infection of
human peripheral blood leukocytes.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a serious worldwide health risk and, to date, no
effective treatments to prevent progression to chronic infection have been
discovered. To combat the disease, Egyptian patients often use traditional
medicines, for instance, camel milk, which contains lactoferrin. Currently,
lactoferrin is one of the primary biopharmaceutical drug candidates against HCV
infection. Camel lactoferrin (cLf) purification and biochemical and immunological
characterization have shown its similarity to human and bovine lactoferrin, and
crossreacts with the anti-human lactoferrin antibody. Incubation of human
leukocytes with cLf then infected with HCV did not prevent the HCV entry into the
cells, while the direct interaction between the HCV and cLf leads to a complete
virus entry inhibition after seven days incubation. Our results suggest that the
cLf may be one of the camel milk components having antiviral activity. In
conclusion, we have demonstrated the potential for cLf to inhibit HCV entry into
human leukocytes with more efficiency than human or bovine lactoferrin.

The LEH site claims that lactoferrin actually acts as an iron chelator and that by the chelating action, helps rid the body of excess iron.
There is an iron-depleted form called 'apolactoferrin' which presumably chould be even more beneficial

It does contain iron which gives one pause.... But as it significantly boosts the immune system, I think it a prudent addition to SOC at the END of treatment. Instead of stopping cold turkey at EOT on the soc drugs (like I did on the last 2 txs'), I plan to taper down and give my own immune system some help coming back online. As soon as I start to taper, I will add the lactoferrin to help. Camel Lactoferrin is 30x stronger than bovine, so I will try that.  HR thinks this plan cerrtainly couldn't hurt, and may just help.

remind me what the molecular composition is here...lacto FERRIN...
is this related to any iron compound??

Must be a G3 thing but man you think like me.
Cant help much with the Lactoferrin, but its on my list to investigate.
