Pegasys vs. Peg-Intron for genotype 3a

Has anyone had experience with either Pegasys or Peg-Intron for genotype 3a? Are there any advantages or disadvantages of one over the other? I am a small person so I like the idea of having the Peg-Intron dosed to my weight but does anyone know if a lower dose means less side effects or a lower success rate? I'm getting ready to start treatment and I can't seem to find any answers. Thanks so much for any help!

I'm not a 3A, I'm a 1A and 1B.  I've tried both Peg-Intron and Pegasys.  Pegasys did not work for me and actually made me a little bit worse.  Peg-Intron had more side effects, but worked a lot better for me.  Everybody's body is different.  We can't generalize.  It's been my experience, (and I've treated numerous times), that when I've felt the worst, my viral load and LFT's have dropped the most.  I realize not everybody has this experience.  I've treated 7 times with Reg-Intron-A, Infergen, Pegasys, Peg-Intron, Maintenance and a combination of Infergen-Actimmune-Riba.  All at different times, of course!  Anyhow, this is what happened to me.

Bio, do the search on fibrosis reversal. You will find some amazing articles, and it will definately give you some incentive!! Even interferon maintenance shows promise in halting progression.. There are many stages of cirrhosis, stop it now if its not to late..

Funky, I tried both the meds. My first attempt at tx was with the peg 2b.. I lasted a whoping 7 days on tx. At day 7, Dr ordered me to discontinue the meds. I lost 10 lbs in that first week, and just fell completely apart. Friday night will be shot 32 for me, with Pegysus, peg 2a.. Night and day difference from my opinion.. Its just my opinion, but the pegysus presents higher SVR, and more managable sx's.. Tx is rough and there is no reason to make it any rougher on yourself..

biophil, the treatment can give you a chance to kill the virus and help prevent further liver damage. it has also been known to slow liver damage even if you don't clear the virus...are you going to a good dr who can help you right now? i hope so...can you get on a transplant list do you know?

I am also a small person -- 115 pounds. Before I decided on my treatment I read everything I could about the different interferon drugs. The literature that I read indicated that the pegasys might have less side effects and be easier on the body. You are right -- it isn't weight dosed (the ribavirin will be) but I wanted to go with whatever interferon might have the least side effects. I will take shot #5 tomorrow and I will say it is not a piece of cake, but noone said it would be!
Good luck in your decisions and your treatment.
