Procrit question...

I started Procrit (40,000 units/once a week) about a month ago. My HCT has come up 4 points to 31 which is cool.  However, my bowel movements have started to become very large, soft and gooey (sorry folks!). No pain, cramps or gas. Been on tx 23 weeks now and this change in bowel habits just seemed to coincide with the Procrit.  Anyone else have this happen?  Is this happening to others NOT on Procrit? I've been a Metamucil junkie for yrs. so that's not it. Thanks in advance.

Interferon causes a reduction in the production of epithelial cells, which cover the surface of the body and line all the cavities of it.  This is why many of us have thinning hair, and thin skin and nails.  It also explains the stomach problems and other gastric ailments.  I've done a lot of reasearch on the web since I was diagnosed 7 years ago and honestly don't have any idea where I first saw that aritcle, but I discussed it with my dermatologist, oncologist, and GI and they agreed with that conclusion.

Interferon thins out the tissues in our bodies? I was unaware of that. Where did you get that info?  Thanks.

I was on Procrit for most of my tx, but did not notice an increase in bowel problems when I started it.  As you know, symptoms come and go and yours may be simply a reaction to the thinning of all our tissues that occurs with interferon.  As long as there is no blood or black stool, I wouldn't worry about it, bu as with all changes in sides, I would mention it to your doc.
