Ribavirin Question

Does anyone here feel pain and swelling in their liver 1 or 2 hours after taking their ribavirin dose.  Can the ribavirin inflame your liver?  Also , does anyone know if the "Commitment to Care " program provides ribavirin along with the peg or just the peg alone?

I will be interested to see the Mac's with the PC chip. I used to use Virtual PC, but it didn't work so well. I love the graphics stuff.

PC's

Mac's are primarily used in academia in the USA, which I've been told time and again when I serve on parent advisory positions is the only reality and that those of us in the business world have no concept on what the real world is like.

They used to be used more by marketers because their graphics were better, but that was mostly back in the pre-Pentium CPU days of the PC.

I have no idea how people work in settings like that on tx. How you can work in a school with all those noisy kids or carry mail for the post office or do constrution work is amazing to me. I must be a total wimp. I can barely make it thru a grocery shopping trip without passing out most days. If I manage to do up the dishes or wash laundry my husband praises me like I painted the house or something, he's used to me doing things like painting the house and now I barely get the basics done. My hat is off to all of you who hold down full time work thru this, I couldn't do it.

To add a little, if you are taking the riba with food that has a decent fat content, you still may be experiencing GERD (reflux) from the tx drugs. If so, don't take antacids with the ribavirin, but it's OK to take PPI's like Nexium or H2 Pumps like Zantac. But before you take anything, best to discuss with your doctor to rule out other causes.

Hey there Wyrm-slayer, in answer to your questions:

Q: "About feeling pain and swelling in their liver 1 or 2 hours after taking their ribavirin dose?"

A: I can say yes, but it seems to be related to me  eat enough when taking it or sometimes what type of food I eat when taking it.

Q: "Can the ribavirin inflame your liver?"

A:  I'm not sure if it is documented anywhere, but I have experienced it and since talking to others have found that I'm not alone in this experience.

Q: "does anyone know if the "Commitment to Care " program provides ribavirin along with the peg or just the peg alone?"

A: I'm not sure about the Commit program, but do know that the Pegassist program does.  Also, if you get your meds from a pharmacy, some of the larger chains (I know Walgreens does for a fact from personal experience) do provide special pharmacy service for HCV meds which has a pharmacist available 24/7/365 to answer med related questions as well.  In fact, mine (another shameless plug for Walgreens) actually calls me once a month to see how things are going and if I have any questions.

Hope this helps some.

Hey Jim, I was advised to watch my fat intake as fat accelerates the absorbtion of Riba in the body.  Kind of p-ssed me off because in addition to no crab, shrimp, or lobster, I also had to cut my those prime beef NY strip steaks from my diet.

I was also advised to particularily stay away as much as possible from those fast food burgers, which was fine with me as I don't care for them much anyhow.

GO: Hey Jim, I was advised to watch my fat intake as fat accelerates the absorbtion of Riba in the body.

I guess this is one of those glass "half full- half empty" things.
Does higher fat intake "acclerate" riba absorption,  or does low fat intake "impede" riba absorption. Same meaning to me, just different takes. Since I believe the original studies stated either "take riba with or without food" or "take with food", we really have no baseline to deal with since the fat content in "take with food" was left up to the individual, etc. Personally, I always took my riba with a higher-fat meal to enhance absorption and also because I had less stomach discomfort that way.

Hi Diana,

Glad to hear you are having a couple of good days. It feels like a miracle when that happens doesn't it? I love those days, although it seems like they are few are far between these days. Who knows, maybe you will be one that gets fewer sx from now on. I sure hope so, that would be great for you. I don't know how you work in a school on this tx.

Wouldn't you agree that working in a school for 10 yrs shows either great tenacity or mental illness, LOL....No really its so refreshing to not have a complaint.....How are you doing kiddo?

Quite opposite of you guys from what I've read and been explainned - the riba NEEDS fat to be absorped as it is fat soluable...so if you aren't getting ENOUGH in your diet you will not get maximum Riba levels.

I know in my case it surely did work...it was fairly easy to see with the accute way my hemo dropped.

I have NEVER read to give up fat content - steaks perhaps because of the iron factor but...aside from that no.

And I've had no stomach issues at all.

With the amount of ice cream we eat is no wonder our Riba is absorbed so well!!!

AHHhhh you got it!  AND it's the biggest perk of the bunch isn't it?   :)

Had some double chocolate brownie fudge last night - ah it was like beinga  little kid and I literally wanted to lick the bowl.  It took ALL of my willpower not to!

After being in a school for 10 years, they have decided I am 55% disabled emotionally and unable to work. They are absolutely correct. There is no way I could do it on tx, it was hard enough on nothing!

New York Girl brings up a very good point. Are you taking the riba with enough food and fat? If not, it can sometimes be very irritating to the stomach, plus it may not be absorbed as well.

It helps that mine is a desk job with my own office.  However, having to deal with developing kernel level software for Microsoft Windows does make it a bit challenging to keep the Riba-rage in check.

But it does help one develop patience while waiting to the computer to return from all those reboots I have to do.  Hey, perhaps I could catch some cat naps then to help with the fatigue from the anemia.

Windows ca induce rage in even the healthiest folks!

My current beef is with Linksys wireless that is supposed to enable me to sign on from any room in the house..but it's not happening. I think it is these 1926 lath and plaster walls (maybe) but I can't get the darn thing to work unless the computer is in the room with the router. Grrr.
I have had amny Microsoft induced headahes and anxiety attacks, you have my sympathies. I don't know how you guys can hack desk jobs either! Hope you are faring ok today.

You may need to see about using a large gain antenna on your wireless access point.

I use D-Link for my connection, but my laptop is using Linksys built into it.  I first used a 5db gain antenna instead of the factor supplied one with my Access Point/Router and was able to connect from about anywhere in my house and recently switched to a 7db gain antenna so I can connect from out in my yard.

These higher end antenna's used to be quite expensive, but have gotten very reasonable lately.   Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion, is that something I can purchase? Wow, that would be great. Linksys keeps saying it isnt their problem and it should work so therefore something is wrong with the computer, but I have put every computer in the room with the router and its fine and wors fine so that isnt it. I hadn't thought of an antenna but that sounds like it will definately work if I can find one. You sound computer saavy do you have a good place to find these things? I guess I could order one online or something. All we have locally is CompUSA and that is in the next town. They do not allow "big box" stores in this town at all so it is hard to get a lot of things. I had Target stores withdrawal when I first moved here, the closest one is 40 miles away.

You ever get your home PC working?  If not, may you have a source here with Dr. GO.

Here's a link to a site where I frequently purchase computer components on-line.  This link should take you directly to a page with various wireless antenna upgrades.  I recommend getting the omni-directional ones over the directional, the difference being that the omni reaches out a full 360 degrees where the directional only does so in two directions (i.e. front and back NOT either side   or   North & South NOT East & West if you have the antenna facing either north or south).
