breastfeeding

I am courious about being able to breastfeed my baby, the Dr. has just dismissed my questions.Everything i have read says it is safe, not to mention that my hep c is INactive.I would really like a concrete answer,of course if there is any risk to my baby i will Not do it.But if It is safe then i would like nothing more than to be able to do this for my baby.

I have this leg pain pre-tx. It's a deep, dull, ache, from my knee-caps,to my hips.It comes on days that I also have fatigue and I definitly think it's A Hep c symptom. I think my bloodwork said my platelets were on the low side of normal. This Hep c sure is strange! Anybody else have leg pain pre-tx?

I take a small dose of the xanax everynight (2.5mg) It really helps cuts the sides (ear ringing and shakey feeling) but doesn't do anything for the other 100 sides that I seem to suffer from.  I have been very symptomatic from day 1. I did have a very good week last week and thought the worst was over but It all came back.  I've been sick 6 out of 7 days every week.  I'm thankful that I don't have to work right now as I got laid off my job right before I started tx.  I wouldn't be able to work the way I've been feeling. So I have my hat off to all that work and take this crazy stuff.  I'm 1a, stage 2 fibroses, 11,000,000 vl on pegysus week 11.

I would think you wouldnt need the Xanax if you take the Vicodan.  Are you taking Xanax regularly?  You prob'ly get somewhat mellow and be able to get comfortable for a few hrs. It depends on how sensitive you are to drugs.  If a little goes a long way with you I would suggest taking half a Vicodan at first to see if that doesnt help with the pain.  Definately it isnt recommended to drive or work while taking those drugs, but wait and see how they affect you.

Thanks for the info.  I do have a prescription for vicoden waiting but I never picked it up because I felt I had enough drugs in my body but it seems now the pains are occuring more often and tylenol only works for an hour or so. I wonder what happens if I mix xanax w/ vicoden?

Sorry to butt in on your thread, hope you don't mind.  My question is, what causes leg pains?  It's not cramping, just aching in my legs, low back and hips. I heard someone say it has something to do with the nerve endings.  I get bouts that last about as long as it takes for the asprin to kick in. I just spend an hour writhing on the floor in pain trying to find a position that didn't hurt. Any one know what causes this?   I'm on pegysus shot 11

If you are going to ask a doctor (which is a good idea) I think you should ask a liver doctor (GI or hepatologist) who is current on this topic. Probably the best thing to do would be to pave a PCR to test viral load. Then you will be sure that the virus is still gone. If you don't have the virus in you then you can't pass it on in any way. If you do have the virus it is not believed you can pass it on through breast milk.

I looked into this a bit and can't find anything that says Hcv is passed this way. Every study I read shows the results are the same wether you are breastfed or not.
The only thing I could find at all was that some are concerned if you were to breastfeed for a LONG time....longer than 10 months. They worry about bleeding nipples and such and the resulting possibilities. Hell...by that time he should be able to go out in the backyard and HUNT his own food anyways.
I was breastfed far too long though and so have some problems. My wife is REALLY tired of me begging for.... FOOD and asking to go to Hooters all the time.

Go ahead and enjoy this most special time with your baby.

The OB called me back and didnt run the appropriate test i guess,so i dont know anything about my titers. When he called me back I mentioned breastfeeding again and told him all the research i have done and he sounded surprised and said still if there is any chance at all you shouldnt do it.Any research i have done including on the CDC website says that he wont get it or says the chancesare slim to none.I dont know what to do.HELP!!!!I think I should just go with my instincts huh?

regmel, I never did find the cause of the pain.  If I did my shot in my right leg, two days later it ached terribly.  Now I do my shot in my left leg and I've not had any problem.

boosmom,  I breastfed both my children.  At the time I didn't know I had Hep C.  Both my chilren (23 and 25) have been tested and are negetive. Good luck with your decision.

I breastfed four children for a long time and only had one child tested.  He's negative.  I wouldn't give up breastfeeding for anything in the world.  Go for it!  Lori

Hello,
I'd have the OB call the old doc, unless HE's covering the bases, to find out how "undetectable" for HCV was determined.

"Undetectable" is used as a technical term to mean that blood was tested by a PCR (viral load) test, and depending on the sensitivity range of the test, the results were below the low end of the range.  That can mean zero virus, or a very few.  If a person has very few, they are likely to multiply and flare up.

Foreign Girl and Great Bird have that right.  I breastfed two kids, too, and they're fine.  Enjoy the experience, but I suggest limiting the time... think of what benefits are most important beyond a year, for example...  Maj Neni

If you have antibodies but the virus is undetectable, then what he said is true. Are you one of the 15% were exposed but fought it off? OR did you treat it with interferon (in some form)?

If there is NO virus, then (of course) there would be nothing you could pass to a child in breast milk.

If you do not have any virus (based on a sensitive viral load test) I'm surprised he would call it "inactive". Maybe its just symmantics, but how can something be "inactive" if it isn't there?

I breastfed both of my kids and they are fine. Just watch for cracked niples and bloody milk.

The last Dr. I seen for my disease said exacally that"inactive",youll never have to worry about it again, youll never have to call me again, its undetectable, its inactive. His words!I know that ill always test + for the disease but he made it sound as if ill never have to be concerned about it again. Please let me know if hes wrong.I have a call into my OB right now cause he took another test as to the status of my disease but he hasnt called me back yet.I was always told the same thing you said but thats what he said and ended the call with have a merry christmas, ill never hear from you again! What would you get out of that?

Everything I've read said it is safe too, and I breastfeed two children and they don't have hepC.

What do you mean "inactive"? There is no such thing as a "carrier" state for hep C. Someone who has only minor liver damage after many years still has an active virus. It is true that the virus does seem to be more active in some people than in others.
