Swollen face and stomach

Has anyone experienced swelling of the face and stomach on tx? I weight about the same as I did when I startet tx but I have noticed that I'm a littlebit more swollen, in the face and in the stomach.

Can it have anything to do with blood transfusion or is it the meds?

Oh, I meant to say is that I developed Interferon Induced Hypothyroid like Scherpie and I have to take the same medication as well however I did not gain weight. Indeed, I lost 13 pounds (5.8 kg).

Also, in my case it was the TSH number that was elevated to the double digits.

Do you labs have the reference interval next to the individual lab value? Or does it just give you a number with no basis to compare it to? Your TSH looks OK but I don't know the reference interval for Serum Free T4 (if that is what the second one, S-FT4 stands for.

I don't know, I am not sure about weight gain. Scherpie gained 7 kg weight in 3 months whereas your swelling seems to be isolated to your abdomen. Plus you wondered if it could be fluid in the beginning. Not saying it is but we all know what weight gain feels like and that's not quite how you described. The other thing is that you indicated you have not really gained weight.

I just took my thyroid test, my blood test says the normal range is:

0.34 - 4.82

it looks you are ok there.

If anyone knows more about thyroid and blood work results, here is what I found about my numbers before starting treatment:
S-TSH: 1.44
S-FT4: 15.1

Sherpie: interesting what you tell about your experiences and that it was related to thyroid problems. I've read that it can go hyper in the beginning and later in tx hypo. If I've understood the blood tests related to thyroid, I have to look at these tests:
S-TSH: 1.66
S-FT4: 16.4

These results is from a test I took in the end of March.

Is this "out of range"? I'm not getting the ultrasound for about 1-2 weeks so I have to be patient about this..gives me even more time to speculate on this myself.

It seems that I started out with this:
S-TSH: 2.40
S-FT4: 13.2
This test was taken about about 4 weeks into tx. I don't have the numbers from before starting tx here.

I have noticed increased appetite as well the last weeks, so it may have to do with low activity + more eating....not funny to gain weight as a new sie effect..:(

Thankfull for any comments on these numbers. Thank you.

It's Friday evening here in Norway now so I will now throw myself into the dent that I've made in our sofa :) and watch some tv.

Have a nice evening.

Sorry it takes so long for the results to your ultrasound. It is weird the swelling comes and goes. At least it is not painful. Do you weigh more?  Anyway, it's probably not helpful for us to do all this guess work but I hope you feel better and find out what is going on!!

I'm so glad that your doctor has ordered an ultrasound. I had a lot of bloating during the 12 weeks of eating monstrous amounts of fat with Incivek, but it was always pretty obviously due to digestive distress over all the fat, and I'm not sure that is the situation for you. It's good that it will be properly checked out. Keep us posted!

Hi,
I can tell you my experience.I have got 7 kg weight in first 3 months treatment. I did not eat much. Always the same!
My face was swollen and my left leg. I had also oedeem bij my knie.
3 months later when I started to take Thyrax because of my thyroid I lost extra kilo's quickly. My face is back to normal now. My leg is a little beter also. But this maby has nothing to do with your problem. I think doktor must take you serieus so that kan be done something abouth it.
Regards

Hi Bovary: Sorry to hear you are still having difficulty with this issue. I look forward to abdominal ultrasounds. They are painless don't take long. Have you had one before? If not, you may want to look at my 2012 ultrasound report that I have posted on my personal page. My ultrasound checked liver, spleen, and gall bladder. I imagine there are other things they can check with an ultrasound. Cheers, GB

I really have no idea. I called the nurse yesterday and she just called back today after consulting with my tx doctor about it. She said they want to take me in for an ultrasound to check my stomach. I don't know what they will look for, but I'm very glad to be taken serious about this cause it really bothers me to not have any kind of answers to why my stomach is so swollen/bloated for a while now. They don't seem to be familiar with this side effect and neither do I find many posts about it in here, so...will be nice to find out more about it.

I will keep you updated when I've been in for the Ultrasound. Can take 1-2 weeks. Maybe it interests someone that also experience this through tx.

I really feel that identifying the sx's is important for me. When finding out here that it's something "normal", to be expected, I can handle a lot more, than just don't find any similar stories about this.

Is *** related to your blood transfusions at all?  What does your doc say about it?

just bumping this one up, since the bloated/swollen stomach has come back. I can't seem to find enough info on this. Does some of you also have this side effect?
I'm not having naussea, nor diarea or constipation. I'm not having any pain in the abdomen. Only very swollen, like I have a football in there. No pain, only very uncomfortable, as I'm petite and not used to look like I'm pregnant...my daughter, 4 years old, said yesterday that it looks like I have a baby inside - and that I'm sure of it's not!

Anyone who have some more info. Last round, in March when I first posted this, I mentionned it to the nurse, but she didn't seem to be concerned. I don't know if she even has mentionned it to my doctor. It went away for a while, but has now come back "full size".

I would appreciate just to hear that it's "normal" and not dangerous. My blood works seem normal, I suppose (besides the low hgb). My Bilirubin has been in the range between 13 and 39. Last time at 21.

First, let me say I agree with can-do that you should contact your doctor, especially about the facial swelling, but also about the abdomen.

Second, I never had facial swelling, but I was exceptionally bloated and I was nauseated. I felt like I had a 60 pound (28 kg) baby in my abdomen and I was bloated from the pelvis to the rib cage and even higher, lol. It was very uncomfortable.  After I finally got on prescription Zofran both the nausea and the bloating almost disappeared completely (as long as I take the Zofran every 8 hours).

Talk with your doc. Maybe they can order something for you.

I'm pulling this thread up to see if anyone else have similar experience?
I'm having a swollen abdomen and it's the whole abdomen, not just upper or lower part. I haven't had this before (before tx) and was wondering if it can be a side effect?
I have no pain, just being very swollen..
I also have to pee a lot more than before. Can it be because of extra fluid in the abdomen because of the meds?

Understood. I'm at the limit of my elementary knowledge on this topic. Sounds like you and can-do-man have a good plan. GB

Sentinel: it's not so defined and it's more like I feel bloated in the stomach. I feel it when I put my pants and they usually weren't feeling so tight around my waist. I must ajust my belt. The pain is not constant. It has been more intense in the last couple of nights and it's in the upper part of the stomach (not any particular side). The same feeling as when you're ill and feel you have to throw up.

The abdomen contains the stomach (upper center left), liver (upper right), intestines (lower), and a few other things. Just want to be sure which area of the abdomen is swollen.

Hi Sentinel: I'm not strong in English here: what is the difference between stomach and abdomen? It's in my stomach I suppose.

Hi Bovary: Was the pain in your stomach or abdomen? If abdomen, where? GB

can-do-man: I will call the nurse and ask. Have had pain in the stomach as well for the two last days and will ask if it's the transfusion that causes this.
I'm also thinking of asking about dose reduction instead of having transfusions.

Sounds more like the blood transfusion.
In some cases, you may need to take a diuretic (medication that reduces swelling and fluid retention)

Call your doctor if any of the following occurs
Swelling in legs, feet, hands, arms, or face
