I let ya in on a secret...You don't have to open a new thread everytime to respond or make a comment. Just click on your previous thread, and hit "post comment" button at bottom of page.

There is already a "cure" for HCV..It's called interferon/riba combination treatment.. For geno 1's, it cures just about 50%. For geno 2's and 3, it is near 80%..

I don't think any one was being negative, it's just that on that first link, they use a photo of a junkie preceding an article about Hep C following the stereotype that everyone who has hep c was a junkie which forms the stigma.

I WAS a junkie and DID get it from IV drug use, but also think that that photo is distasteful and ugly.

NYgirl - you posted about using malox/benedryll for mouth sores. About how long did it take for you to notice a difference? How often did you swab your mouth?
all - any suggestion for dry eyes?

I wasn't trying to be negitve at all with my comment to you. I may be feel very negitive about the news article that chose to place that photo, caption and not mention any other means of HVC transmission in the article. This is the kind of thing that makes it hard for us to get support and money for the cure of HVC. The stigma of it being ONLY IV drug users that get it. Sure there are lots of people that get it that way. Remember when HIV was considered the GAY disease? The stigma was unbelievable! No one wanted to help. They raised awareness themselves and put a better face on HIV than was more positive. It helped them get celebrities, money, fund raisers etc. The amounts they get comparitively is amazing.

I just looked at that article, farout, thats pretty bad, and yeah, its in 1999, they wouldnt want to put a picture like that in the paper these days, id certainly have something to say about it.  That picture has probably damaged us heppers more than anything.
You are right sfbaygirl, the stigma is real bad, it isnt just drug users that get this disease and the public needs to know that, we need to do something like they are doing with AIDS, get more public awareness about it.
Im sick and tired of us having to wait for Celebrities to get something done, but unfortunately that seems to be the way of it all, it hits their doorstep and they become involved.
What we need is some Government people to come directly involved with hep c, then we would see something happening.

What we need is a close community (like gays) and leader as powerful as the one that lead the fight against AIDS. It would be sure help. Gays really did an amazing job of raising awareness during that time it was killing so many.

Sorry i double posted the same thing.

Yeah i agree we need someone powerful, but until someone actually has the guts that is powerful and admits they have hep c nothing will get done.  I suppose if hep c came along before AIDS so to speak and we got in there first, we may have got somewhere, but AIDS seems to overtake hep c and seems to be more important.
Wait till it more and more people are being infected with hep c, and it becomes an epidemic bigger than they all thought, which it will.
Statistics are now showing that more young girls between ages of 15 and 19 are becoming infected with hep c because they are going out with older men who are injecting them after they inject themselves, and the girls dont know any better, which is where education in the schools needs to be put in place.
I keep repeating myself, but i will say it again, that if someone has a fight with an infected person then that person also becomes infected if there is blood spilt.  How many people get in fights, especially young men that are showing off their strength and how good they are with their fists, u know, growing up stuff which most men do.
This disease will spread if the public isnt made aware of all the ways it can be contracted and not just through injecting.

I totally agree. Although we are preaching to the choir on the forum.

Not many people realize you can catch hep c from fights or abuse.

Or that 50% of the deaths attributed to HIV/AIDS are also people who are co-infected with HCV.  Which begs the question as to the cause of death: Was it because of HIV/AIDS or because HIV/AIDS allowed HCV to destroy the liver?

sfbaygirl: Not many people realize you can catch hep c from fights or abuse.

Perhaps that's why most studies reporting on what percentage of the population is infected always exclude those in prisons, where surprisingly the ratio of infected to non-infect inmates is much higher than the 2-3% which the CDC claims is ratio in the USA.

Our own local support group has also done testing at many gay pride events and found that the results indicate at least a 4% infection rate amoung professed homosexuals.

As far as I know, no one has tried sampling the homeless, which like the incarcerated is another group excluded from all studies I've seen, to see that the ratio is there.

Yet despite all the large untested segment of the population, coupled with the infected portion which will not acknowledge their infection for various reasons (which seems to be mostly due to the fear of being judge based upon the IVDU stigma), the studies by the CDC and others still claim that the infection rate is on the decline and will eventually become a non-factor as those from the Make Love Not War hippy era die off.

I didn't know the CDC was saying that. That is ridiculous! Without the testing of young people, how do they know this? As we know it takes some 30+ asymtomatic years before they discover they have it. With the CDC saying this, it seems like we don't stand a chance of anyone taking this virus seriously.

Howdy, I picked up some tylenol pm tonight. Going to give it a try, sure hope it helps me sleep better. I have turned a 180 from my old sleep habits, my head use to hit the pillow and I was out like a light, not now I toss and turn for it seems like two hours. Well thanks agian for the advice. Do you have to take the tylenol pm everynight or just the first few nights following the shot.

I tried it for a couple of days before it worked. AT first it didn't look like anything was happening at all and I was like oh no...I'll have to swab on some peroxide but at least that will kill it for a little while (GOD that hurts to do) and when I got home that day and looked it was just gone.

I swabbed it on again with a qtip last night and I put it all over my tongue as a preventative. I HATE those bumps so MUCH UGH!

I was just shocked that it worked. I hope to God it works for you.  I did it several times each time sort of like rubbing so it would get in there and not just be laying on top. Equal parts of each.

Did you swab multiply times during the day or just morning and night? Also did you get dry eyes? If so what did you use.

Why do you give yourself shots in the eye my doctor said it was best in the stomach and thigh. I would suggest you seeking a more qualified doctor. Dale

I use a mouth cure that is basically the same ingredients as what you are using but with some added numbing agent thrown in that I have a prescription for. It works great with the added benefit of offering immediate relief because of the numbing agents. If I have a sore, I use the stuff every few hours and it clears up in a day or two. If your sores are persisting and the goop isnt working it could be that their cause is herpes or some other viral agent. I know many use Lysine to help them. I'd speak to your doctor and make sure he asertains what they are caused by so you an treat them appropriately. See if lysine is ok to take on tx ( I was told it is) you a purchase it OT I believe. Good lucck finding a solution. I know the mouth sores can be a REAL bummer on tx. Mine have completely cleared up now so hang in there.

here is what my pharmacy makes for me it is called " Magic Solution or Michael's Magic Solution"

lidocaine 120ML
Nystan  240ML
Benadryl 80ML
Decadron 40ML

Speaking of negative stereotypes I posted a thread on Cryoglobulinemia a few days ago and one of the sx of this is rash and they showed a picture of the rash on a mans hand with a huge marijuana leaf tatoo under the rash, then stating that cryo is normally associated with hepatitus. Needless to say I was a bit miffed.

what exactly is bothering you?
I am not sure why you feel like you are doing everyone a favor by posting articles that are 7 yrs old in this forum.  We are pretty much updated on the latest articles, thanks to very helpful members here, which is what you should be reading in order to get a more informed view of hep c.

Most of us have also heard of colloidal silver, thymus gland, and most other 'alternatives' out there in case you feel we should be 'enlighten' about other cures.
thank you for your input and be well.
