Hep C Nutrition for Patients on Tx

Sharing Info received by Renee ********* (Nutrition - expert forum)  on Hep C

Consuming a diet moderate in fat would help the liver with any disease. The less fat in our digestive system, the less the liver has to work to break it down. Moderate fat diet means = use polyunsaturated (omega 3, corn oil, nuts, etc) fats and monounsaturated (olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, etc) fats, no saturated fats and no Trans fats. Eat low fat meats (chicken, fish, loin of pork) or non-meat sources (soy products, nuts), low fat vegetarian combinations (rice & beans, pasta & beans, low fat cheese & pasta), fat free or low fat dairy products (skim milk, 1% milk, low fat cheese, low fat yogurts, low fat soy milk/yogurt), use plant oils, non trans-fat margarines, and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Eat daily high fiber breads and cereals (oatmeal). Hope this helps you.

I started the Teleprevir trial 2 weeks ago. The sides have been easily manageable and treatment hasn't altered my life all that much. Before treatment I would read this site and think I was going to a hate coffee and foods that I eat, but none of that has happened. Does it happen to some, sure from reading this site. Could things change for me... sure but I am taking it one day at a time.

I take my last dose of Teleprevir at 9:00pm with a little yogurt and about a cup of milk. Don't let this site or what you read change your life... go about your business drink plenty of water exercise and you can do this.

I will be praying for you...

When you're undergoing treatment, there are a whole new set of dietary issues. It's hard to understand them going in, but once you've started you will. The issue is not mainly about maintaining liver health. Hopefully, the drugs are suppressing the virus in your system, which does more for liver health than any diet. The issue is more about maintaining an equilibrium in the face of drugs that do a number on your digestive process.

Normally the advice is that you can eat anything you want to keep up your weight and stamina. The treatment drugs affect your taste buds, making some categories of food distasteful.  For example, for a time I found any trace of salt in food horrible. I lived on frozen waffles with maple syrup. The one essential is that you drink a great deal of water every day. If you want to drink diet soda that's fine. Indeed, if you want to drink regular soda that's fine.

It is my understanding that some people lose weight but others gain weight during treatment. As my sides have become more manageable, I have moved to something closer to my old eating habits which are fairly healthy. I've managed to stabilize my weight through a combination of weight training and dense foods. The main thing to understand is that treatment is like a roller coaster. You can't really anticipate what it's going to be like. You need to roll with it as it poses new challenges. Good luck.

Well this seems like a reasonable way to eat, if one is eating to maintain a healthy liver.  This is the way I normally eat and would have done so when I start tx in a week.  I was given a list of high fat food to eat three times a day with telaprevir meds.

- Bagel with 4 Tablespoons Philadelphia Cream Cheese (  talk about saturated fat )
- 2 slices of salami, bread and 2 tsp of butter or mayo
- 1 cup ice cream
-  Chocolate filled croissant
-  Whole milk only

The above is a small example of the high fat foods on the list.  I was under the assumption most people lose weight while taking the meds and have been gouging myself trying to gain weight before starting tx.  Huh--looks like I will be gaining because I have to eat like this late at night  ( midnight )  .  Geeez--have never eaten like this, with all the high fat and late at night.  So in addition to worring about the Hep C , now have to worry about dropping dead from clogged arteries.  Lol !  Wow !

I am a little confused because it goes against all I have read about the liver friendly diet.  I asked the trial nurse if there was anything I shouldn't eat and she said " No "  I asked her about diet pop and she said its alright for the liver ?  Hmmmmmm--seems to be some differences here.

Guess I'll have to eat bad for 3 months because the meds are better absorbed with fat.  Not looking forward to all this fat.  Hate ice cream, but love cheese.  I'll just load up on cheese, while I'm reaching for the exlax.  Oh my !
