What are you all eating?

by DonL, Jan 28, 2004 12:00AM
Since I started tx, I've found that most food makes me queasy.
I'm a good cook and the only thing I seem to want to eat is pasta with fresh tomato sauce. I have read a lot about diet, and I am not looking for that type of info. What I am interested in, is what foods do you find yourselves eating? What tastes halfway decent? What do you avoid?

So far I have found that I don't have much of an appetite but after making myself sit down and start eating, I find I can actually eat the food.  However, if I didn't make myself I probably would not eat very good.  I usually eat oatmeal, orange juice and toast in morning.  Lunch is usually a sandwich or soup.  For dinner I usually fix a meat, potato and vegetable and cut a small portion of meat for me to eat.  Normally I would be snacking more and I find I'm doing good just to get 3 meals in me.  I do also try to keep fruit on hand and make myself eat that also.

pasta, bread, milk  i have never eaten so much pasta...im 2/3 through tx and am getting so i can eat steak now and a baked potato...can also tolerate well cooked broccoli....my diet is not good and i wonder if that is actually why my hair is falling out.

I also seem to favor pasta with a little sauce.  I have pasta almost every day. It is one of the few things that appeal to me.  Egg noodles with butter and a little parmesan, too.  Bland foods work best for me.  Plain Quick grits also go down well. I've also taken to drinking hot water with honey.  It's easy on my stomach, helps settle down my riba cough and gets rid of metal mouth momentarily.  I've given up on a well balanced diet (I know, tsk...tsk).  For now, I just eat what I can stand to eat and take my vitamins.  Just trying to drag my butt across the finish line.

When I was on tx evrything tasted gross to me, fruit and toast were my best friends and sometimes mac and cheese and Instant oatmeal... I was nauseous and lost alot of weight. Now that I am off tx for 4 mons now, I have gained my weight back and food taste great now. Still have a few nausea days due to relapse I'm sure but your taste buds will return AND your hair too  :)

Eating is veey hard for me since starting tx.  I have lost over 40 lbs and weigh in at 98lbs.  I've been able to tolorate different things at different times.  Right now bisquits or toast with butter and strawberry jelly seem to be the only things working.  At one time it was only cinnimon toast crunch cereal.  Oh yeah I eat a lot of french toast.  I have found that my taste changes quit often and what went down easily yesterday may not go down today.  I don't think I have eaten meat in months it just doesn't settle well.  Find something that works and eat, eat, eat while you can.  I'm not sure how we are to have any appetite when we fill up on water all day long, my family is always reminding me to eat.  It seems like I just simply forget a lot of the time because I just don't feel hungry.  Good luck and just try to make yourself eat.

You have already lost 17 lbs in 5 weeks?  That is alot.  Maybe if you have some easy things there at the house to fix...you could make yourself eat something.  You really need to focus and try to eat.  I know what you mean though about just thinking of the energy to go and boil some water and if I think about it too long..I won't do it.  I am pretty much making myself eat as i started out 130 and 5'6 so I can't really lose to this year 20 to 30 lbs or at least I pray I don't.  I have been averaging so far about 1/2 lb a week I'm losing.

I am so glad you said "tv bothered you" as I thought this was just me.  Sometimes noises just send me over the edge and I keep asking my hubby if he feels same way and he is just looking at me like I have 2 heads haha  Yeah at the end of day...I don't want to hear anything..Just silence.  I read your other post about feeling great before you found out you had hep c and now worried about effects of meds.  I have been experiencing same thing...I never knew I had this disease and felt so good and now this medicine of course is taking its toll somewhat and I keep thinking...what if I don't clear???  Will this be the beginning of me feeling bad do to one thing or another? Maybe I'm feeling parenoid as my hubby says we have to try to heal ourselves but....  Also on your energy level..I know what you are talking about but you will find if you walk or get up and make yourself do something that you will feel better. I know that sounds weird but everyday I have to force myself to go to my office and do all my things and then come home and walk a mile or 2.  My legs aren't as achy I have noticed as the days that I do nothing.  I hope this helps somewhat.  I know this board has saved my sanity going through this.

I too have all but lost my appetite, but I am trying to have the foods that I used to enjoy alot, and that has helped me.
Breyers chocolate ice cream, mexican food with soy meat, veggies. I just found a new soup and sandwich restaurant and their food is GREAT! Nice hot bowl of soup and a great big fat greek salad still tastes very good.
I still find that fruit juice is very tasty and have that alot.

Donl, while I was on treatment, I would eat yogurt every morning because I was getting that yucky yeasty thrush in my mouth from treatment and that really helped a lot. I forced myself to eat a bagel with cream cheese in the morning with the ribaviron because my Dr. told me it was good to eat fat with the riba, and the bagel just added some calories, which I needed. Lunch was tough - I could no longer go out with my lunch buddies at work and didn't want to eat. I found ice cream (which normally doesn't appeal to me) to be the best dinner for some reason. The hardest thing for me was that almost everything I ate seemed very very spicy - my mouth would burn. I will never forget my boyfriend taking me to a really nice restaurant for Valentine's Day and I ordered seafood ravioli and couldn't eat it because it was burning my mouth. My boyfriend tried it and said it wasn't spicy at all. Just wait until you're finished - you'll probably be eating like a pig like I still am nine months later!!!

Thanks all. As always, it is nice to know you're not alone in this. And Raheem, you are an inspiration. I have begun to emulate you, at least partially. Water water water...

luxury ice cream and chocolate were my favourites.  I was also partial to a curry now and then.  I couldn't beleive I could eat all these things and lose weight - well 7lbs in 48wks - now all back on and more!  That was the one side effect I actually enjoyed!

by jonihs, Jan 29, 2004 12:00AM

I am very lucky, I am on the seefood diet, I see food and I eat it. I am gaining weight on TX, weird! All food does taste good, just some not great! I actually "graze" all day, I eat a little foos every couple of hours

by new-sojourn, Jan 30, 2004 12:00AM
I made a blenderful of yougurt, rice protein powder, raw egg, banana, and fresh fruit (esp berries) or 'canned' fruit, apple juice, maybe ice cream.  And various additions-vit c, joint juice. etc.  Some days, I would just sip on that all day.  And nibble on English muffins.  Dinner was always lightly prepared lean protein, 2-3 veggies, 1 green, 1 yellow (red), one raw (salad) and a whole grain bread thingy. I also had a dessert (usually chocolate).  Hey, I wasn't drinkin' anymore.

I still eat that way.  I now prefer 85% cocoa, hey, I'm still not drinkin'!

Its 'Glucosamine and chondroitin w/ MSM and Collagen'-natural mixed berry flavor, no sugar, low sodium. I get it at Costco, I get almost all my supplements there, b/c I trust their reserch and love their price.

Many people don't do eggs b/c of food bourne infections and/or allergies.  B/my partner is a gym rat and puts them in the blender.  I didn't like his 'he-maN PROTEIN' POWDER,' that hairy chest thing and all.  I settled on soy or rice protein powder.  Also, I use soy yogurt sometimes b/availability and cost are a factor.

B/the color is very important, as is the texture. I like it pretty and smooth.  No "Fear Factor" concoctions for me!
