My husband had the opportunity to enroll in the Alinia trial but decided against it since 1/3 of the trial enrollees get Peg & Riba without the Alinia. Instead, his hepatologist agreed to prescribe it off-label -- in fact, just got the prescription written today: 500mg 2x a day for 4 weeks before adding Pegasys (180 mg) and Riba (1200 mg) for a planned 48 additional weeks. We were told that few have side effects with the nitazoxinide, but that if GI concerns arise to get some Activia.

I was treament naive and have had very few problems with it. There were GI changes but nothing remarkable. I became UND @ 2 weeks, Gauf, 3 time treater UND @ 7 weeks, myown, (don't know history) UND @ 3 weeks, Kittyhalk tried it as monotherapy, no good, again with SOC 50,000,000 vl UND @ 9 weeks. kitty had GI issues but also had MANY divers issues. I would not even consider treating without adding it to SOC. jerry ps I have learned to FULLY cook eggs before eating!!
My husband is also taking Alinia and it is his third try at tx. Peg-intron and Infergen were worse for Joe . He has been sick with nausea quite a bit and had diarrhea trouble for the first 8 weeks or so but something seems better this time than the other two treatments.
He got his 16 week viral load back and he is at 1700. He started at 3 million something and while this doesn't seem astounding, it is way better than he ever did before. He had a 3 log drop by the 12th week where he hadn't even made a two log drop in the past. He is on a higher ribavirin dose this time too. We are planning to do 48 weeks from the time he becomes undetectable.

honestly Giddy's year on daily infergen was way worse!!! He does have some stomach issues, but nothing horrible, he does take antinaseau meds, and acid reducers, but seems to have maintaned his weight and his appetitie is much better on this than on any other treatment
ny....it is an anti-diahhretic (can't spell that one)
hershey squirts:)
To be honest I have to say I don't think we've seen any remarkable astounding results from it and it is an anti-diahhretic (can't spell that one) so you have to take it with care. A lot of people have tremendous problems with gastro issues on treatment - personally I couldn't have taken it in a billion years.
Hi maybe I can help you out here..Giddy's typing is for the birds, although he does try..
its the Romark study..one alinia (nitazoxanide) tablet twice a day ..although its a double blind study so who really knows if its a placebo, the problem with phase II studies, ugh.. and 180 peg a week with 1200 riba/day. You take the "alinia" for four weeks prior to beginning the full regimen. His vl was around 3 million when he began and at week 20/24 depends if you count the first four weeks.. VL is now 1500. little ******* virons just won't quit.He seems to be tolerating the side effects better this round, 4th go around, but has a nasty rash that is making him miserable. any other questions I will be sure to check in..
