accidental injection into vein

What is the worst thing that can happen by accidentally injecting Pegasys in a vein?  My absolute neutrophils dropped from 1000 or so to 445 this week.  I noticed a large bruise at the injection site and stabbing pain in my neck for a couple of days along with a wired feeling.  Could all this be related to vein injection?  If so, was that a wasted shot as far as treating the virus is concerned?
Just curious and any advice would be appreciated.

If you aspirated (pulled back on the plunger) before injecting the syringe contents, without seeing any blood, you should be okay.  The bruising is caused by tiny veins/capillaries leaking into the site after being pierced by the needle on its way in. Some do feel wired after the shot, I know I get that way, mind racing and cant sleep.  But as far as the pain in the neck goes I have no idea.  Call your Doc/nurse or Pegasys 1-877-734-2797.
Best to you!  OHC

I don't think you have any worries. The shot was not wasted even if by some chance every drop went in a vein.

The question of aspirating before injecting is a topic of debate. The bottom line for injecting interferon is it doesn't matter much if you inject some into a vein, but other medicines you absolutely do not want that to happen.

My absolute nuetrophils just dropped dramatically for no apparent reason. I already do Nuepogen once a week. Doc called and said to increase to twice a week. I've never hit a vein. Don't worry about it, I think it is just coincidence. These meds are weird and you can never figure out just how they are or aren't going to affect you.

Boy, I be eloquent and co-ordinated... geesh!

Unless you are using one of those horse-needles, you aren't likely to hit a vein. The smaller blood vessels you might hit will cause the "bruising," but it is unlikely that the tip of needle entered a tiny capillary and you injected a large amount of meds into it, extremely unlikely.

Again, even if you did inject into a vein, it isn't a problem with INF.

Hi everybody!
I've been a little worried about this happening myself. My nurse at the Gastrologist's office that gave me my first shot didn't aspirate the injection and when I asked about it she just blew it off as of little importance. I have been more concerned with pulling some blood up and having to throw the dose away. The dragon would love that, wouldn't he? I would like another professional's opinion about this. I guess I should have asked before now. I'm on my eighth week and feeling some better. I don't post often but I feel like I know some of you guys by reading your letters. I am a very lucky man just to be alive, so beating one more dragon is definately within reach thanks to people like you all who have given so much love and support. Thanks!  ; ) Maybe someday I can help with answers instead of questions.

I was extremely apprehensive before I started giving myself injections.  I questioned about the vein thing after I read from the pegasys insert that if this should happen (if you pull the plunger back and there is a trace of blood in it) then you have to throw away that injection and do a new one.

I questioned the nurse and my GI about this. I asked them where on my leg would be the best place to inject so I wouldn't hit a vein.  They both told me that it would be almost impossible to hit a vein because of the size of the needle being so small as well as in the thigh area where it is suggested to inject, the veins are very deep and the needle won't reach that far.

I don't know what would happen if you injected the medication directly into the vein but I've read this question on this forum and on another hepatitis educational forum and really haven't heard that anyone is doing this.

Pinch a nice lil hunk of fat on your thigh and pull it up away from the area before you inject.  Good luck.

I know this was wrong but......My husband took me to Lake Tahoe for 4 days to get me to calm down a little, been really stressing anyways did my shot when I got there and spent the next day in bed (I know some vacation huh?) but the 3rd day having fun sightseeing and I had 1 beer. Later that night I broke out in a rash all over my legs and arms. Got sick to my stomach later in the evening. Was this because of that one beer I had ? Haven't drank one drop since I started tx, and won't have another as long as I am on it. Did I waste that shot or screw up my whole tx treatments?

There surely isn't anything wrong with getting away for a while to destress, but I'm a little puzzled as to why you would want to drink. I'm not fussing at you...I use to love a cold beer now and then as much as anyone, but I felt a strong commitment to turn my health around by doing whatever it took, so I quit. The doctors here told me they wouldn't even treat me if I continued. Well, what's one beer? I don't know if you possibly had an allergic reaction to it or not. I'm going to guess, since I've experienced some strange side effects each week, that you are going through the unpredictable ride of the treatment that's considered normal. I really don't think you wasted your shot. From all I have gathered so far it must be very unlikely to be able to hit a vein. Anything is possible, though.
Some day when I find out that I'm cured (SVR), I will, once again, enjoy a cold beer, until then I'll do what they tell me to do. Good luck, and stay with this support group to stay strong. ;-)

It was probably unrelated to the beer, but you are feeling a bit guilty, I guess. I personally did not drink during my 6 month tx, but I know a couple of people who had the odd drink and nothing weird happened to them, and they both now are SVR. So, calm down and don't beat yourself up over it.

Seriously doubt one beer during tx would make any difference.  TX is such a grind please don't beat yourself up over it.  I snuck in one Carolina Pale Ale one week post tx with no ill effects.  You'll be fine.

Thanks for reminding me I am stupid, don't you think I realize that already that is why I asked for help in answering my question. I am 39 and on my second round with this sh**.I have no damage to my liver yet,and never was a big drinker. Had my share of partying with my biker friends but nothing to cause this disease. (Tubal pregnancy that erupted and had to have emergency blood transfusion) and the doctor told me  that 1 or 2 glasses of wine or a beer)during my treatment (like at my daughters wedding next week, which by the way I will not do) would not hurt me. My question was regarding the sides that happenened when Stupid me had that one beer. I wanted to know if thats what caused those side effects.Sorry I was so STUPID but after two times on tx,I just wanted to forget about all the aches and pains and pretend I was fine for just a few minutes.

I agree that it is highly unlikely that you injected a vein.  Please don't beat yourself up over one beer.  It was a coincidence, no doubt.  The bruising is from hitting a small capillary and I've done it myself with the neupogen.  Oddly, I've never bruised with the peg or Procrit, but one time I got a bruise the size of a saucer on my stomach from the neup shot.  The extra symptoms probably don't mean anything either, as each shot has it's own little personality.  I would be greatly concerned about the neutrophil count, tho.  It can definitely crash that fast, I've done it.  I went on Neupogen when I could no longer keep it above 800.  Please be careful and wash you hands a lot.  Take care.

Galen:
I think you have me (hepC avenger) confused with doll face.
I was the one posted on this thread originally about possibly injecting into a vein. Doll face's question was whether she was having a reaction to her beer drinking "binge".
She probably wonders why you are talking about her neutrophils when she didn't even mention them! LOL!  I know, the fog is probably getting to you!  Just three weeks left, right!?

Brain fog every where for a moment I was thinking Maybe it was me LOL. Talked to my doctor yesterday. He said that you probably did not hit a vein or waste that shot.He said the chance of actually hitting one is so very small.

I told my doctor about beer"binge" and he said that the reaction that I had was probably due to the elevation change from Tenn to Lake Tahoe and had nothing to do with drinking.

I had a glass of fine French champagne on my son's 21st birthday, and afterwards felt really guilty and stressed about it... in fact, it didn't taste any good to me, and I couldn't enjoy it at all. But I doubt it did anything to the tx; it seems so trivial after 2 months.
To avoid feeling like a party-pooper or feeling left out or feeling guilty at your daughter's wedding:
Perhaps you should bring a special bottle of sparkling non-alcoholic grape juice.  It is bottled to look like champagne.  It tastes pretty good, is pale gold, and fizzes nicely.  You and the happy couple can be privy to the secret, and can have a special toast.

Congratulations to the young couple and the proud parents.

Thanks for your post. We have already ordered non alcholic sparkling wine for all the quest that don't drink. This is our second child getting married this year. Didn't drink at the first one and won't feel bad for not drinking at the second one. Proud partents we are. And soon to be proud grandparents for the first time. Can't wait to be done with tx so I can enjoy my weekends doing grandma stuff. God Bless K
