begaining tx with low body fat?

i was wondering if folks that had low body fat begaining tx were more successful then thoughs with high body fat...i asked my x today if she had any sx left after tx and she said none at all..she had low body fat going into tx like 8 years ago ...did 48 weeks tx...after scratching head made a comment on feeling better being skinny i was reading about the liver and gallbladder and how fat is processed and with an impared liver it looks like any extra fat could be a big problem...i know even when i have 5 extra pounds i seem to have more sx...so when they say 50 pecent cure do they account for folks with different amounts of body fat starting tx?...billy

I started tx with a very high BMI. I  achieved SVR.
Im not overweight..just lots of fat storing in my body- which I am trying to control to a degree by eating properly.

I wish you all the luck.

I also started out with a viral load of 75 million 1A.

With this disease you just NEVER know.

A high BMI can be a negative predictor of outcome - however being thin really isn't an indicator of anything.  A few years ago someone in here said that every skinny person would automatically get SVR.  Not true at all.  Personally I had a very low BMI and still had a heck of time a time getting to UND even though I was practically double dosing my meds and was as far as I can tell 100% compliant (plus LOL).  I ended up having to do 72 weeks but did finally get SVR.

You do the best that you can and follow all the guidelines and pieces of advice and at the end of the day - that is really all you can do.

It's a good question!  I believe I have read that having a normal BMI may be a contributing factor in attaining SVR.  From my own experience, I went into my first treatment very underweight (and with a low BMI) and did not have any response to 24 weeks of treatment.  In my second treatment I went in 12kgs heavier than the previous tx, but with a normal BMI and I had a more successful outcome.

I think BMI is not a very reliable predictor for who respond well to the meds or not.  There are many folk who might be termed overweight that have treated and been successful. Interestingly, fat is the way the ribavirin is assimilated in the body.

It's more important that you get the right dosages of the meds, the appropriate length of treatment, and that you are 100% compliant with the meds.
