Welcome to the forum. You can have normal levels of ALT & AST and have Hepatitis C. Mine have always been in normal range even when I had Hepatitis C. ALT & AST can go up and down depending on different events
like drinking and drugs. So you should get tested for Hepatitis C even if you have low or high ALT & AST values.
Best to you
My ALT & AST were always in the normal range, even when the viral load was very high. For example, this winter my viral load was 16,000,000 and ALT & AST were both 22. Just before the treatment, my viral load was 7,150,000, AST was 24, and ALT 31, both is in the middle of the normal range.
My always normal ALT & AST were the reason for a significant delay in the diagnosis. With numbers like this viral hepatitis was the last thing on the doctor's mind. The Dr. even tried to convince me that all my complaints were in my head. ..and so it was Red Cross who diagnosed me.
I heard that about a third (-?) of the Hep C patients have normal ALT & AST, but, I also heard, that this does not mean that the virus does not affect the liver. ..but I have never had any scans or biopsy, so I don't know.
These are my ALT and AST I have had Hep C for probably 36 years
ALT (GPT) 78 Std Range <33
AST(GOT) 54 Std Range 0-50
My doctor once said really elevated would be in the hundreds and would occur if you have and acute infection.
c: At my lab, the ranges are:
My Lab. Mosby's. (1992 Ed)
AST (SGOT). normal = 13 to 39. normal =. 22 to 59
ALT (SGPT). normal = 7 to 52. normal=. 0 to 35.
So 'Normal' kind of depends on what Range YOUR Lab uses. I didn't see anything that referred to really high. I have always been below 80 on my labs, but wouls expect 100+ MIGHT be considered really high, but that is just my humble - and not a medical- opinion.
