hello genedog
welcome to the club.  what you have is not mange.  i had it in 97 - its called lichen planus and there is now a proven connection to hep c.  do a search on google and you will find loads of info on it.  just to be sure was your rash symmetrical - like if you got it on your left ankle you got it on your right.  it follows the nerves - nothing itches like it and it gets worse at night.  it starts of red goes purple and fades to brown . you were lucky just to get it on your legs. it goes everywhere, yes even there and the inside of your mouth too where it makes white streaks and on your scalp too.  i had it on my arms, legs, hands especially ankles stomach and back and it drove me crazy.  the medical term for the itching is 'exquisite pruritus' which i love.  there are medical studies that show that the itchy lumps you can get left with have hep c in the skin.  it gets worse with stress.  no one i saw knew about hep c so they tested me for b when they saw my liver enzymes, it slowly went away and i thought no more about it until i got diagnosed on a check up last november.  gee thanks doc.  i can still remember the dermatologist saying to me as i sat crying about the itching and disfigurement (which fades in a year or so) 'don't worry at least its not lifethreatening.  8 yrs on her husband my gastro is telling me take interferon or you'll die of cirrhosis.  wish it had been mange, could have howled a while with the dog.  by the way the standard treatment for lichen planus is to whack you with hydrocortisone which i luckily declined as my gastro told me it would have sent my liver enzymes in to orbit.
good luck and happy scratching - its best to disable fingernails

Do a google search on hemochromotosis (sp)or iron overload. When you say the skin on your chins turns brown.......could the color be bronze? Iron overlaod is easily
treatable with phlebo's. The test name to check for it is HFE gene type. What do your lab numbers look like on iron and ferritin? Bronze chins can be an outward sympton of hemochromotosis. Good luck!

Itchy rash sounds like eczema, don't know bout the turning brown part, tho.

Put some vaseline on it after you shower, before you dry off. Eczema needs to be kept moist, the vaseline seals the moisture in.
