Elevated serum ammonia levels are sometimes attributed to cirrhosis, and more directly to poor protein metabolism, I believe. If you’re experiencing confusion or combative behavior along with increased blood ammonia levels, you should speak with your doctor; he might prescribe Lactulose and/or Rifaximin to help manage this.

can blood ammonia levels be checked through a standard blood test
I don't believe it appears on a routine panel such as a basic/comp. metabolic panel or CBC, but it can be ordered. Are you cirrhotic?
