At 24 years old went in the Hospital to have my first and only child.  I was so healthy.  Came out of the hospital with baby two days later. One week later I was so ill and tired.  Two years unable to care for my baby. City doctors said I had a virus filling me with antibiotics. 3 years later research hospital said I had an unidentified virus and city doctors were killing me with wrong medications.  My organs were trying to shut down.  So very ill.
That was 1969.  Later I think it was 1990, doctors told me the virus was Hepatitis C and no cure.  Today I am 68 years old and never treated.  My life and energy has never been the same since that day in the hospital. I've always been more tired than I should during each year of my age.  However, the vitamin program one doctor put me on has helped me through life.  When I run out, I feel the difference. I became mostly healthy again and have lived somewhat normal life aside from knowing I must sleep until my body wakes on it's own, leaving me able to work and function great through the days. This is such an important factor with Hep C.  Sleep until your body wakes on it's own. I have always had a job that did not demand I work their hours or punch a time clock.  Could never do that. Although I have made it this far, I will say Hep C has destroyed what my life could have been.  It destroyed my ability to fill my ambitions to be able to do what I would have done without the fatigue rearranging my good hours, it destroyed my marriage and I never remarried, it destroyed my ability to enjoy raising my daughter and being an active Mom. My awaking hours I had to work to support us.  I recall so many days when I was alone, I fell to my knees and screamed at God to help me.  I had no other support or family, knowing if I did not get up and keep moving forward, me and my daughter could be homeless. Somehow God was beside me.  Today, my daughter is doing well, We both own beautiful homes.  At nearly 69 years old, I still have never treated and NO doctor has ever suggested treatment to me. As I said I am on a vitamin program.  Doctors say to me:  "What ever you are doing, keep doing it because it works for you."   I have no idea what my blood tells them.  I have never had an invasive liver biopsy, and the doc says he doesn't think I have cirrhosis but maybe possible some liver damage.  At my age I now refuse any invasive treatment.  I mean why live my remaining years with horrible treatments and feeling ill, or invasive painful treatments?  This is my story.  If I knew what I know now I would have sued the doctors and hospital that destroyed my life.

i am also a nurse and have been nursing for over 30 years.  back in the day before safe needles and precautions,  we were getting splashed on sprayed on and stuck with needles.  i just found out last august that i have had hep c for a long time without any s/sx of this disease.  i now have ESLD, cirrhosis and HE.  i hope someday that there will be mandatory testing for all health care workers for these nasty viruses every 5 years.  so no, i don't believe the stats because how many older nurses have it and don't know?

No one wants to hear the news that they have contracted hep c. What I will say is if you are one on the unlucky 10% who actually do get it from a needle prick, there are new treatments I'm sure you know about that will actually cure it in short order. There is also the chance that you will clear it yourself.

Best of luck that this is just one of those learning experiences that we sometimes go through and don't do too much damage.

A big majority of us who are or were acutely and chronically infected don't know how they got this disease. All that matters after the fact is that we get the dx and get tx'ed by a knowledgeable doc with best tx options available, before things get out of hand.

When you are one of the 10%, the odds always look higher than what is reported (grin).

This is from the dept of health:

The risk of transmission of HCV after a needlestick exposure from a hepatitis C-positive source is estimated at between 2-10%

I do not believe these stats. I know far too many folks in health care whose exposure lead to hepatitis C (more than 2%). I am one of them. Joanne.

Given that you have had an exposure from caring for a patient, if you work in a hospital setting, make sure you prepare an incident report and document the exposure (including documentation of the patients's status) and do follow-up. Although your exposure was likely small and the potential for acquiring Hepatitis C is also small, there is a potential. Do a baseline enzyme/PCR-RNA test and follow-up blood tests (including LFTs) (antibodies/virus will not be immediately detectable...however...enzyme elevations in the acute stage - sometimes quiet significant [which was the case for me] will show up within a few months in most cases).
Wishing you the best. Joanne
