lab question

I finally got my blood test back from the doctor who called and told me I tested positive for the Hep C. The range on it was 0.0-0.9 s/co ratio. Mine was 11.0. Is this a definite test that I do have it. Is there a possibility it could be a false positive from medications. The doctor said my liver ultrasound did show fatty liver but other than that it looked ok. Thanks for any feedback. I am just trying to educate myself and of course am worried and scared.

The Hepatitis C antibody test will only tell you if you have been exposed to Hepatitis C. About 20-25 % of people who are exposed to Hepatitis C will fight it off on their own. They will always carry the antibodies but they will not have Chronic Hepatitis C. Medications will not affect the result.

In order to know if you have Chronic Hepatitis C you need to get a Hepatitis C RNA done (HCV RNA). This test will tell HCV RNA  PCR if you have Chronic Hepatitis C and if you carry a viral load.

"The following tests may be used to diagnose a current infection and to guide and monitor treatment:"

" HCV RNA test, Qualitative is used to distinguish between a current or past infection. It is reported as a "positive" or "detected" if any HCV viral RNA is found; otherwise, the report will be "negative" or not detected." "
" HCV Viral Load (HCV RNA test, Quantitative) detects and measures the number of viral RNA particles in the blood. Viral load tests are often used before and during treatment to help determine response to therapy by comparing the amount of virus before and during treatment (usually at several time points in the first three months of treatment). Some newer viral load tests can detect very low amounts of viral RNA. "

If your HCV RNA is negative, then you have successfully fought off the Hepatitis C infection and you do not have Chronic Hepatitis C. If the HCV RNA is positive, then you do have Chronic Hepatitis C and will need further testing for Genotype, liver function tests, liver involvement, other blood tests, etc.

So your next step is to get the HCV RNA test run. That way you will know if you have Chronic Hepatitis C or not.

Best of luck.

I'm not sure of the test you took

Signal-to-cut–off ratio predictive of a true positive ≥ 95% of the time
if it was Advia Centaur HCV Bayer CIA
(Chemiluminescennt Immunoassay) ≥ 11.0

http://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/hcv/labtesting.htm

After a person has tested positive for HCV antibodies, an HCV RNA  PCR viral load test is usually performed to confirm active HCV infection
Liver function and other test like cbc blood test are usually run
Then HCV viral genotyping test
Test to detect the grade and stage of fibrous.etc.

HCV is on the threshold of new non interferon oral drug treatments that have a very high chance of curing the virus with less side-effects. A couple just recently approved and more in the next couple of years or so...

Many have had HCV for 20 to 40+ years and will help you through this process with encouragement, suggestions, opinions and support..
