sores in the mouth

by shupeg, Apr 09, 2009 07:27AM
I am looking for any help with the latest and perhaps worst sx so far...mouth sores.

I am on week 14/24. Pegasys/1200 riba. I am also on meds for hypothyroid, dermatitis, depression and insomnia. The brain fog has rendered me useless necessitating a leave of absence from my own business.
While my ride in the perverbial handbasket has all been worth it (und at 4 weeks) the mouth and tongue soreness has put me over the edge. I have been using biotene toothpaste and mouthwash since I started tx and there is little relief for this.

I mentioned it to my doc but I do not really want another rx if it is at all possible.

I looked up some older threads on mouth soreness and read about swishing with kaopectate.

Thanks all,

shupeg

Here's a copy of an old post.....can't tell ya where it came from, I was a newbie at the time and just wanted to save the info, lol!!

I use magic mouth wash, i make it myself though equal parts of benadryl, lidacaine, and malox, swish and spit.  i used biotene tooth paste and mouth wash.  and i used a little hydrocortosone cream for the cracks on side of my lips.

I think you may need a prescription for the lidacaine...not sure, but a pharmacist can probably direct you.

Good luck.  Hope you get some relief.

The dark liquid stevia totally did it for me. A few drops in the mouth several times a day. We use it on all kind of sores. From cuts in the mouth, tooth aches, sore gums, blisters etc. I cut my finger badly with a super sharp knife the other day and it is almost healed up due to the Stevia. It will sting the first couple of times, but then it's fine.

I really swear by it.

Ah, yes...stevia..  I forget.  I worked very well when my gums and teeth started to hurt.  I didn't even have the dark liquid. (remember that, Marcia?)  It was like rubbing sugar on my gums right before bed....but the next morning...pain was gone.

Maybe try making a mouth rinse from that.  Or just putting some on the sore spots.

This is such timely advice for me too. I am doing shot 15 tomorrow and the tongue sores are particularily bothersome the last week or so. The cracks in the corners of my mouth don't hurt, but make me self conscious. I'll try the stevia too. Biotene isn't cutting it anymore.

Thank You. I ran to the cupboard and grabbed the white stevia powder...What relief!
I will look for the dark liquid the next time I venture out. I appreciate the help and non prescription remedy. I forgot to mention that in addition to the drugs listed in my post, I  have already had 6 shots of procrit without any lift to my wbc. Next week, I have an appt with a Hemo /oncologist. It seems ironic that I may need a blood transfusion for the blood transfusion that started this mess....

Happy Holidays,

Shupeg

Ask the oncologist (or your primary care doc) for an Rx for ‘Magic Mouthwash’. This is routinely prescribed for cancer chemo patients that have problems like this. It’s a blend of Maloxx, benadryl, and lidocaine; sometimes it also has Nystatin (an antifungal) with it as well.  While it doesn’t fix the problem it provides nearly immediate relief; it numbs on contact, and lasts for about 20-30 minutes. It’s a swish n’ swallow liquid that your local pharmacy concocts, and is relatively cheap.

Best of luck—

I have no advice for this is the one sx I have not experienced yet, but its not over.  I did want to say how bad I feel for you and understand most of what your going through.  Its really awful, but we will get through this one day at a time.  In the end it will be so worth it, and this six months of hell will seem like a small bump in the road.

I too have my own business and am not as productive as I use to be.  Needless to say I am only working part time now.  Most of my customers have been with me for years and will hopefully stay with me.  Although, I do expect to lose some of them but figure when I am better I can build it back up.  For now it is the least of my worries.

I hope you find some relief with the suggestions above.

.

It is a sweetner extracted from a plant native to South America.
Stevia is technically the genus from the asteraceae family (sunflower) There are over 200 species.
Google has a long list of sites to browse
http://www.holisticmed.com/sweet/stv-faq.tx
It is a natural sweetner/ sugar substitute.
I bought it for my husband to use when he began looking at sugar substitutes..

I use the concentrated liquid and find it at my local health food store.

... just google stevia and you will find a lot of info.

I never tried the white powder... I'm glad it works just as well, it also did for Izzy.
Just keep on using it, you might not need the dark liquid. My guess is that the dark liquid is more concentrated though, and thus probably more potent.

THANKS ALL FOR THE INFO.   I'LL PICK IT UP THIS WEEKEND AND GIVE IT A TRY

Since I posted this morning, my lips have become unbearably chapped.  It is the oddest thing, so sudden....and the lip cracks are back. I've tried all the tricks all day with no relief.... I am about to try experimenting with the stevia for this and see what happens.

For a different approach, while on treatment I also got mouth sores and used Aloe Juice as a swish and swallow. It worked for the sores and also made my stomach feel better.

Hello!
I remember using a moisturizing mouth gel at night made by orogel. -It has a glycerine base, and it prevents "leather tongue" at night...It was quite nice. Also, good old bag balm works great on mouth corner cracks...(and elbows...and fingers...and those itchy patches from the shot sites...) :) ~Melinda

Gotta say....the stevia helped my lips last night.  I have some on now...it really seems to take the heat out and relieve the inflamation (inflammation).  The cracks have been reduced by about half.

Tonight I'm gonna make a balm with stevia and the organic lip balm my friend from Denmark sent me....thanks, Marcia, lol!!
