What are the chances?

Hello;

Boy, am I glad I found this place! I have a couple of questions... Over the weekend my older daughters boyfriend accidently told my husband and I my ex-husband is sick and doing chemo. When I called my ex he said he is sick with Hep C and has to do treatment once a week for 11 months. He wasn't very forth coming with info and bascially told me to mind my own business. I happen to disagree, we have 2 children together and I want to be able to support my kids, plus my ex. My ex spent about 16 years in prison and I'm assuming he got this there. He did do drugs while there. He also started breaking out in shingles (4-6 times a year) back in 1994.

My question... What are the chances I have gotten this? I plan on calling my Doctor tomorrow and starting to ask questions... What test should I be getting to be safe? I have 4 kids and what I've read, I would be the one to give it to them!? Can anyone tell how to answer questions for my older kids? They are 12 and 16! My son (12 year old) seems scared and my daughter (16 year old) is being treated like an adult and expected to be like a Mom. My ex is really leaning on her!

I think that is it to get me going... Thanks for listening and reading my thread. I'm hoping to get some good advice here!

Worried Mom...

The chances sound pretty slim unless you were doing drugs with him (then it depends on how and how often you know...).  Calm down, get the test and live with the peace of mind that you don't have it.

I had it for 20 - 25 years and neither of my kids got it. I made a deal with God if they didn't have it I'd do treatment so I had to do 72 weeks.  I never regret that decision, it was the right one.

I have to agree with Ladywhy, your chances are slim. Unless there was a transfer of blood while he was infected would probably be the only way to contract Hepatitis C. Talk to your local doctor and let him know but whatever you do, don't freak out for the kids sake. You'll be fine. Take care.

There is a slim chance of getting this virus sexually. It is a blood to blood borne virus. There are many on forum who never knew they had it and have been married many many years...and there spouse does not have it. Now sharing razors and toothbrushes is not recommended. The father can't pass the virus through his sperm.
For your peace of mind...have a liver panel test done that checks for Hepc. Your PC can order it.
