My daughter also has hsv 1 around her rectum from a diaper rash that I had a sitter put cream on. The sitter had a cold sore :( she has suffered with this since she was 2. My heart breaks every time!!! Let's pray for a cure for these in ice too babies
I hope you are able to get her referred to the dermatologist. this doesn't follow the typical hsv1 genital pattern and if it's something you can take care of - antifungal medications, change something she is allergic too or treat a bacterial infection or some sort of dermatological condition ( eczema, psoriasis etc ) - less discomfort for her :)

Sorry, I didn't think about being in different countries...lol
My daughter definately caught it from me, as I'm the only one that looks after her. The dermoatologist at the hospital said it was because she had nappy rash at the time.
I've managed to get an appointment with the doctors for tomorrow morning. Hopefully she will get some help. I'm hoping that the doctor will refer her back to the dermoatologist.
Wish us luck
You are in the UK, rules might be different than for child protection services than here in the US. genital herpes is pretty much exclusively transmitted to children from sexual abuse and if a provider doesn't report a suspected case of it to children and youth, they can have their license revoked and charges brought up against them for not doing so here in the US. The odds of someone having a cold sore and giving herpes to their child during a diaper change are so low that it's not something that is ignored here. Most researchers say it's impossible even.
If your daughter is still getting recurrences this frequently, she needs a further work up from a dermatologist. Also no reason for her to suffer through recurrences every other month. She can take acyclovir 2x/day to prevent them. it's available in a liquid form for children. hsv1 genitally though tends not to reoccur this often. Further testing to see if this is all herpes related going on is in her best interest.

it was way too late for a lesion culture.
blood tests we currently offer are not accurate in children your child's age. No reason to put your child through the trauma of a blood test for a test that isn't even going to be accurate.

I have a daughter who was diagnosed with HSV 1 genital herpes when she was one years old. The doctor orginally thought it was just nappy rash, but the infection was so bad that she ended up in hospital and was put on a anti-viral drip. They did a swab of the infected area and she had to have gauzes smoothered in vasaline over her gential area. I was questioned about whom had had contact with her but when the doctor visited the ward, he told me that my daughter had most prob contacted the infection from me, as I had a cold sore at the time. I felt so guilty afterwards and still do now. My daughter is now 4 years old and at school. She has an outbreak every other month or so, and the school are great about it. She actually has an outbreak now, which I think she may need some meds for, as it is worse than previous outbreaks. All i worry about now is when she gets older. The stigma surrounding genital herpes is not very nice, but all I can do is teach her to be safe.
I just wanted you to know that you are not alone.
oh and no one contacted child protection in my case.
I think you should find a different pediatrician for him. Because even with the doctor visually diagnosing it as hsv-1 it wasn't reported? That just does not sound right to me. And if they suspect they might not have gotten a good swab, why didn't they just do a blood test anyway to be sure? Is there anyway he can be having a reaction to the diaper? Perhaps he has an allergy to something in his diaper?
If by chance, child protection was called, you and your husband may want to be tested for hsv-1 and hsv-2. If neither of you have it, then you would have it on paper to prove anyone who questions it.
I had him seen yesterday morning and they did testing. Should hear back today. The rash is mostly dried up, so they may not have gotten a good swab, but they can do a blood test as well, if needed.
The baby needs to have a culture workup to identify that it is hsv. If it is hsv anyone that changed his diaper could have infected him. It dosen't necessarily mean the baby was sexually abused. Family members may have the virus and not know it. The hsv can be transmitted by a hand if an infected person touched their mouth prior to changing a diaper. Babies get rashes all the time in their genital areas. Insist upon the doctor to swab a culture while the symptoms are present.
you wouldn't get chicken pox just in the diaper area and not anywhere else. Also typically children who have chicken pox have fevers and other signs of illness too.
really, it is in your child's best interest, and yours, to pursue a more thorough work up for this.

Go to the doctor again, christ!!
Just looking is still a bad way to diagnose and since you say that it is IMPOSSIBLE that it could be herpes then guess what; its something else.
Aaaaaand if its something else dont you want to know exactly what it is? Ofcourse you do, since you asked about chicken pox, thing is even if Grace or anyone says "oh absolutly" we still have not seen your baby and we could be giving you bad advice. Best thing for your baby is to be seen again, maybe by a different doctor, and have som real testing!
Good luck.
Do either one you guys have hsv1?
Just thinking, could it have been chicken pox?? I know that it is in the Herpes family and the rash looks just like the pictures I have seen online...
no, this is absolutely not something he would get from a shopping cart or any other surface.
topical zovirax ointment isn't even an effective treatment. he needs to be seen and get a better work up done.

Is it not at all possible that he could have picked up the virus from a shopping cart or something? My child has not been in anyone else's care but my own. I don't even have friends watch him during the day or anything...it is impossible that he was abused...however, I am a bit irritated that my doctor did not even test it. The cream, zovirax, seems to be working, as some of the lesions are clearing up, but some of them also seem to be quite irritated too and he is definitely in pain.
a visual diagnosis was totally inappropriate in this situation :(
You can't tell type either by looking at it.
bottom line, your child needs to be seen and get the better work up you need done. Anytime herpes is suspected/diagnosed in a child in the genital area, child protection services also is notified. It's in your best interest to get a much better evaluation done of your child. Herpes does not show up in the genital area of children and if this really is herpes going on, you need to get to the bottom of it. Sexual abuse is the way it would get there.

no. The dr. looked at it, was rather appalled/surprised and was quite sure it was herpes.
did they do testing on the rash?
