All about GHSV-1- Emotional reaction

Dear Dr HHH,
I was diagnosed (by my doctor) with GHSV-1 6 months ago & have since been plagued with the traditional signs of depression and low self image. I acquired GHSV-1 through un-protected oral sex. I never knew oral-genital transmission could occur & maybe this is due to my ignorance but there seems a severe lack of information on the risks of oral-genital contact. Anyway, I must now try & cope with my new diagnosis. I am aware that GHSV-1 is less likely to recur & less likely to asymptomatically shed than type 2; however  I still have an "STD " which has severely affected me psychologically. My specific questions are:
1. Why is GHSV-1 an STD when approx 70% of the population has the same virus just orally
2. I am 30yrs & afraid it will recur when I am pregnant. What are the chances if this. How common is it for a midwife to treat a patient with GHSV-1.
3. I need any emotional reassurance from you- how bad is this really? You say most people react with little or no impact but the social & low self esteem issues & anxiety I feel are significant. I have gone from happy & outgoing to struggling to get out of bed in the morning.
4. How common is GHSV-1 really? I had never heard of it before.
Thank you very much.

Thanks. All the websites say it is commonly transmitted oral to genital. It used to be believed that transmission could only occur when visible cold sores were present .
It's a shame the doctors are not taking any further  questions right now.

Hi, the doctor dont answer here. But will try to help.
1. Oral HSV1 if not considered an STD but it can be transferred to the genital area as you have discovered. .
2. Since you do have outbreaks which are not likely to re-occur, it wont be as big as an issue if it was hsv2. But none the less, antiviral maybe administered during mid way a pregnancy just as a precaution. Midwifes dont treat hsv, only a doctor could administer antivirals
3. Having gential hsv1 is not any big sign of a promiscus sexual lifestyle, it merely infers that youve had oral sex.
4. Its not common at all but this is a recent discovery in the medical field of herpes as was not known it could be contracted in the genital area from oral sex.
