Are HSV aoutbreaks gradual?

I had hope that my 8 week negative test was correct, but today I confirmed I do have the virus since today my hands started breaking out (I'm thinking for having contact with my ex's genitals), my index finger has a cut close to the nail, it got swollen and I have a bunch of white spots under the skin on my fingertips (mainly) and a couple on my palms. I'm scared my genitals are next =/.

My question is why am I breaking out so slow and for this long, it's already week 9 almost 10 weeks, is this supposed to be normal for the first outbreak? I'm freakin out I'm afraid to touch things =(

I don't know what's going on with me but hopefully I can get some health insurance because this has become very expensive, I am not seeing a doctor right now, I'm just taking a lot vitamins including lysine which I have read helps with the outbreaks.

I have also read that herpetic whitlow is very painful and all the signs were there the white patched under the skin a cut on the cuticle on my index finger which was getting swollen and then it started to go away the same day, some of the spots are still there but the cut is almost gone, this is just too weird everything just kinda seems like it's going to flare up like the tingling around my lips but then retracts like it's too weak or something, I'm not complaining though.

Hopefully I can get some type of health insurance before the end of the month and change doctors because the one I have now hasn't helped much.

Hi, the only real way to know what going on is to have a swab done of a new sore within 48 hours after it appears. Anything short of this is pure speculation as to what they are.

Fleetwood is correct in that herpetic Whitlow is very rare and i would not think you have whitlow as on the fingers and thumb can be very painful.

I had been with this person for 9 months and I came in contact with the virus from him on July 15th of this year on the 19th that's when I saw the first cold sore on my lip, a coupld of days later I became VERY ill I had to go to the hospital because my throat was all full of white plaque and my mouth was full of sores and by that time there were already 3 sores on my lips, the doctor treated it as if it were strep throat even though the swab test for strep was negative and gave me a strong dosage of antibiotics. At the time I thought maybe I was a carrier of the virus but it was dormant and I finally got an illness strong enough to awaken it. But as time has passed I have seen way too many conisidences that has assured me that it was a first time exposure to the virus.

I read on another site that for some people the first time exposure is misdiagnosed and treated as strep like I was, I don't want to be too explicit but I gave him oral without protection that's why I think my mouth, throat was the one that took it the worse and of course I used my hand or hands can't remember but since I'm getting it on both hands I guess I did. Then we had intercourse with protection that might be why my vaginal "outbreaks" have been so mild. I think the reason for the test to be negative was because of ALL the medication I was under or my body doesn't produce antibodies as fast as others since the syptoms haven't gone away. The skin around my lips used to burn like it was on fire and there's A LOT of small pimples (almost looks like a flesh colored rash) that have been there for about 4 weeks they ocassionally flare up but it's like one here or there and then they dry out, it's not noticable unless I stretch the skin. I don't think I need a test to know I have it, I will test again to make sure what type I have but I don't think there's another illness that would produce the same symptoms as well as visual. It would really be a miracle if all was a conisidence mistaken for another desease.

I did at some point think of it being Hand-foot-mouth disease but I would have gotten all the symptoms as soon as my mouth broke out but there was nothing on my palms or my feet.

And nope he say's he has never had any sores or anything but I think he might be asymptomatic or he had rescently been exposed to the virus as well, I don't know, but he is stuck there, he doesn't have signs of anything therefore he doesn't have it.

I'm still not sure about the risk that you have been exposed to. You have an 8 week negative test and no visual diagnosis by medical professionals. So this is all looking pretty good at this stage in terms of not having HSV.

Let's go into it once you know for sure, but the biggest fear usually with herpes is the fear itself. I have both HSV1 and HSV2 and my kids are all negative.

Is this ex a confirmed herpes carrier and which of HSV1 or HSV2 does he have, and whereabouts if you know?

Thanks, I'm just very confused and annoyed because the family doctor says HSV on the lips is very common and nothing to worry about when I told him that I had never gotten one before, he looked at me like "I'm trying to be special" or something I wasn't but it's the truth I had just come in contact with the virus which I got from oral so for me it is a big deal because I consider it an STD, and then I went to planned parenthood and they told me it's not an STD because I didn't have an outbreak on my genitals, I think I did but not with sores, it just burned A LOT and I got like 3 things that looked like an ingrown hair or a cyst, so they pretty much blew me off =/. All of this has made me fall into a HUGE depression and I'm trying to get out of it for my kids, which now I'm terrified of touching or kissing because I don't want them to get infected. As for the person who gave it to me, I feel disgusted and betrayed for sleeping around while he was with me, and I feel like an idiot for not noticing the HUGE danger he put me in, and now I have to deal with the consequences.

I would be seeking medical advice on this one. Herpes on the hands is very, very rare although does happen. Not possible to diagnose yourself with this. If we are talking HSV2 here then that makes the possibility even more remote. Palms... skin is way too thick for this to be a pragmatic place for a herpes outbreak.

Any herpes outbreak that is more than say 4 weeks after the point of infection is technically a 'recurrence', although it is a moot point. Once infected, it is possibly to have an outbreak at any time, even if you do or don't have one at the time of infection. The main issue is that once the ganglion is reached by the spreading virus then the outbreaks can then be along any nerve strand and not just the one of first infection.
