Buttox herpes

Dear Doctor,

Please help me.  I was just diagnosed with herpes in the buttox.  The doctor was brief & offered no info to me, just valtrex. Now, it has "sunk in" and I am upset.

My questions:

He never took a swab, or anything - should I get one to be sure?

I never have ANY other symptoms, EVER (5 years now) - no tingling, etc.  Is this normal?

MOST IMPORTANTLY, can I get herpes in my genital region, since it is the same strain of the virus?  I have never had them there (in/near vagina), and I never want them there either.  I've only had them in my buttox.

I am child bearing age, is it dangerous, even if on the buttox, because it is in the nervous system either way - could I transmit herpes 2 to the fetus via my blood?

What is the point of taking valtrex if it can't cure me, prevent the outbreaks, or prevent myself from being contagious?  I have no pain or other symptoms, they just itch like a mosquito bite, which I can control myself from touching/scratching anyway.

Thank you so much.  I appreciate it!

Genital herpes lesions can appear anywhere in the entire "boxer short" area as we usually refer to it.  Having your lesions only appear so far on your buttocks isn't unusual. What you need to know is that even though your lesions so far haven't been on the actual genitals themselves - you are still shedding the virus from the entire anogenital area during ob's and in between obvious lesions.  That means if your partner is negative for the type of herpes you have - you should avoid sex whenever you have a lesion on your buttocks.

If you haven't already - be sure to give the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com a read. It's a terrific resource to help you learn the basics about genital herpes, treatments and how to reduce the chances of transmitting the virus to a partner.

also if you have a current partner - they need tested for herpes too.

If your lesions don't bother you - no need to treat them if you don't want to. Treating ob's just helps to speed healing of them.

Let's assume you have herpes which I am not 100% sold on it till you take a blood test, first off, herpes is NOT in the blood. Herpes is in a nerve ganglion and that nerve ganglion covers certain regions and an outbreak can occur anywhere that ganglion serves so yes, it is possible to get herpes in the butt and have it come out in the front if served by the same ganglion. Did the Valtrex do anything for what he callled herpes? Most cases of herpes never have an outbreak so it is not uncommon to have the virus and not know it. It is a very variable disease.

Thank you Grace.  I did not know that during an outbreak on my buttox, I am spreading the virus through my vagina as well!  This was extrememly useful for me to know!  I will check out the handbook for sure.
