understanding my infection and sexual risks

I have been diagnosed with herpes type 1(genital). I received oral from someone who had it. I had a herpes sore on the tip of my penis which was swabbed and tested positive.

I have been reading about herpes, the different types and the infection sites being either oral or genital.
Since I have type 1 in the genitals I want to learn about what the risks are with oral sex.

Is it risky for me to give oral sex now? Has the virus moved from my genitals and is now in my mouth? Can I give someone the virus when I give them oral? Or does the transmission site stay in the genitals?

I am assuming the greatest risk is if someone gives me oral without a condom.
This is what I have read from various websites -
1)I am very infectious when I have sores
2)Even when I do not have sores there is a small chance I could be shedding the virus without symptoms.
3)People with herpes type 1 will have a couple days a year that they shed the virus without symptoms.
I am assuming that given these things its for the best that nobody ever gives me oral sex without a condom because it sounds like there is no way of knowing when I am shedding the virus and there is always a chance no matter if I have sores or not I could infect them.
Is this true?

Thanks for any information

That was extremely helpful. Thank you.

Have you taken a herpes blood test by chance? A positive swab is 100% accurate in terms of diagnosis, but curious if you did blood as well.

Thanks for your feedback. Extremely helpful.

there was a sharp pain on the tip of my penis first thing in the morning, then later on in the day redness, then a blister like sore formed. there was some fluid and puss but it scabbed over the next day and did not leak any fluid after that.
it only hurt when the sore rubbed against anything or I touched it. Like when the doctor did the swab it hurt.
I did not have any other symptons, no itching, tingling, burning.

this is pretty much exactly what it looked like except mine was scabbed over -

http://www.cdc.gov/std/syphilis/images/chancre-penile.htm

which is why I was convinced and really hoping it was a syphilis sore, everything matched up with syphilis except the "painless sore" part.
But I was wrong and tested negative for syphilis and positive for herpes.

You mention cold sore on the tip of your penis. Can you describe what the lesion looked like exactly? How painful was it? Did it open and leak fluid?

I think your experience can help many that have had weird symptoms/lesions but ok positive herpes diagnosis yet.

Did you have any other issues associated with the outbreak? Tingling, burning, etc?

Ok that is good to know that I can give oral sex without any risk to my partner.

The only risk is if they give me oral they might get herpes 1(oral).

@Matt -
It took about 2 weeks and then I got one very noticeable painful cold sore on the tip of my penis. I had hopes it was syphlis since that is usually just one sore, I did not have a break out or anything, but the swab tested positive for herpes 1.

How long did it take for the outbreak to occur after the oral act? Are the signs on your penis obvious?

Yes you can as your herpes is genital not oral. The statement means if you have genital hsv for a long time you cant get it oral.

Ok does that mean that I can give oral sex without any risks then?
The virus will stay in my genital area?

"Those with long standing area infections woudl be basicly immune to contacting it in another area."
What are the implications of this statement?
Does this mean that if someone gives me oral and is exposed to the virus in their mouth, if they have already had cold sores in their mouth, they are immune and will not have any further infections?

Hi, what youve read is accurate but hsv1  genital will not migrate to your oral area. It is in the sacrum ganglion. Those that have it in both area contracted it at the same time. Those with long standing area infections woudl be basicly immune to contacting it in another area.
