HSV1 numbers vary a lot, hard to draw any particular conclusion at all.

I readily agree with your doctor, that isn't what herpes does at all!

Hi dear Fleetwood, last post on this mate with thanks.

Does a very low IgG mean an older infection? My DR says that my only symptom or problem of a red penis for 4-5months which is almost always there cant be herpetic let alone an HSV1 infection?

Do you agree and what are your thoughts? Thanks for everything this is my last question Fleetwood.

Almost no doubt that is the explanation, you have had an oral infection since your youth.

IgM is pointless for you as you have a HSV1. If positive you don't know whether the antibody is there to address your existing HSV1 infection or a new HSV2 one for example. Many people test positive for IgM from about 7-21 days post infection but not all. It disappears quickly and is rarely present more than 6 weeks post infection relating to that infection. Sometimes it appears only days before IgG antibodies. Put this on top of a huge false positive rate and really no point testing for it.

PPS and extra sorry - my IGG result was a very low positive.

PS: The antibody body tests were done at 14 weeks - does this mean that the IGM would no longer be picked up if it was there and it WAS a new infection?

Sorry Fleetwood, I could be being paranoid here.

Thank you Fleetwood for all of the work you do here..Id like to thank you as I have seen all that you do throughout the site and it really appreciated.

Your information here - it confirmed what my Dr told me but I wanted to hear it from you or one of the other regulars here.  I tested negative HSV2 and was swabbed for both HSV1 & 2 genital which were negative but came up positive for HSV Igg which my Dr said was from a cold sore virus and was an old infection and told me from the swabs and the blood / antibody tests and this result that I did not have HSV1 genital.

Would you say that is right? Ive never had lessons, blisters, sweats, lumps, lymph nodes.  The swabs I had done were done on thrush like symptoms that were tested 3 times.

Cheers again mate,I hope to hear from you.

IgG is the body's longer term immune response to infections such as HSV. It takes a few weeks for the body to learn and create this antibody. A healthy positive is a strong indication of infection with a blood test.

IgM is a more immediate lymphatic response to infection. It is more sporadic in nature. If detected it can be a sign of recent infection. It can be hard to catch before it disappears and plenty of false positives. It only has relevance for up to three weeks after possible infection.
