Even though the risk is reduced, HSV-2 can still be transmitted when a condom is worn. This is because the condom does not cover the entire genital area and HSV is spread through skin-to-skin contact.
Thanks Em,
Also, I read/hear that even with a condom (during intercourse) that HSV2 can be transmitted.
Is that, assuming the condom doesn't tear or come off, only if I have an open area on my penis or other areas since the virus cannot cross a condom?
If your girlfriend has a visible cold sore (HSV-1), she can transmit the infection to your genitals. However, you will have a genital HSV-1 infection, it does not convert to HSV-2. Genital HSV-1 infections are different from HSV-2 infections in that they are often less frequent, less severe, and asymptomatic viral shedding occurs less often. Acquiring genital herpes from oral sex is less common than from intercourse, but it can happen. Just avoid oral sex when your girlfriend has visible cold sores (if she gets them at all) and you will probably have nothing to worry about.
Best,
Em
