False positive

Got a full STD test back last week.  HSV 1 & 2 igg (herpeselect) came back positive at >5 & 1.25 respectively.  I have had cold sores sine I was a kid so HSV 1 wasn't a big surprise...but hsv 2 igg @ 1.25 was a shock because i have never had any genital symptoms.  There appears to be a lot of info on the web about a high likelihood of testing falsely positive for HSV 2 igg with herpeselect if you are HSV 1 positive. Is this true?
My other questions are:
1) I had a cold sore when my blood was taken, would this raise my igg count & increase the likelihood of a false positive HSV 2 test?
2) I was taking a prescription testosterone booster (blastofen 20mg) when my blood was drawn.  Would this effect my results?
3) which is the best test to take to find out the my true hsv 2 status?
4) does a low positive count mean I am less likely to transmit hsv 2 if I am in fact positive?
5) what is the likelihood I am negative hsv 2?

Thank u in advance....

Congrats to you!!  your ordeal sounds very similar to mine, routine std check, no symptoms at all ever, one parter within the last year and two encounters with my ex, herpeselct HSV2 + at 1.26, took biokit 3 weeks later, negative result, had already retaken a herpeselct HSV 2 + 1.82.  and the dna herpes test which was negative.

Both partners are negative i am trying to find out how to get the WB.  my doctors are clueless about all of this.  How did you get yours?

again, Congrats!!

No.  Only the western blot can help you now to know what is going on.

Hi again,
So the day I got the western blot I also retested with herpeselect & HSV DNA tests at my girlfriends request.  The herpeselect came back hsv 2+ @ 1.24.
I know the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing expecting a different result but thought I'd bounce my testing history off you for your thoughts.
Oct 25 herpeselect
Hsv 1 >5
hsv 2 1.25

Nov 3
Biokit hsv-2 rapid test: negative
Herpeselect hsv1 >5, hsv2 1.67

Nov 9 (first test taken without active coldsore)
Hepeselect hsv1 >5, hsv2 1.24
Igm - negative
Hsv DNA & WB still pending

Again, I've been very safe & have never had symptoms.  Do 3 low positives with herpeselect for hsv2 trump one negative biokit rapid test & one negative igm test?
Thank u so much for your attention to date.... Your responses have been very helpful.

Its difficult to say anything for certain about this low positive value.  I wouldn't be particularly concerned about the slight increase - a normal variation.  But good that you did the western blot, just to be certain.  Biokit is good, but I like western blot a whole lot better for confirmation.

hi again, would like your thoughts on the following:
the just before i tested negative with the biokit for hsv 2 i took another herpeselect blood test.
the results came back yesterday with an gG of 1.67, an increase from my initial 1.25 which i took about 9 days earlier.
the doc who gave me the boikit says not to worry and i'm trying not to, but my girlfriend has lymes disease and is freaking out. so i took the western blot and am waiting...
any thoughts as to why my gg has elevated? any advice for how to calm down a girl with an immunodeficiency?
thank you in advance.

I could absolutely not agree more.  What testing service did you use?

How can the testing centers not at least tell people to get retested if their results fall in this range?  The woman who gave me my results over the phone just said "you're positive for hsv 1&2, call your doctor."
Given all the data out there and my own experience, this just seems incredibly reckless!

By the way, Betsy gave me the reference for that article - she's very good at keeping accurate track of herpes articles in professional journals, she's extremely well read.   However, since this article was published in 2005, there was a major revision to the HerpeSelect test kit, eliminating many false positives.  I'm not clear at this point what the false positive rates are for various index value levels.

Got the biokit yesterday.... No hsv 2...
Thank u for your help, I wouldn't have gotten retested if it wasn't for this site

I'm not clear where she got that data, and I'm not sure if that is based on the old version of the test or the newer one.

Thank you. One more quick one if u don't mind:
I saw a chart posted by "grace" on this forum that showed the likelihood of false positive based on igg range btwn 1.1 & 3.5.... The data on the chart showed a 1 in 10 chance of testing positive where igg was btw 1.1 - 1.5. Is this accurate?

You are correct that an HSV 2 value of 1.25 while also testing strongly positive for HSV 1 should trigger concerns about false positives.

1) having a cold sore when the test was taken is not relevant.
2) No, the testosterone prescription would not impact your HSV test
3) The herpes western blot, when 4 months have passed since any possible exposure to HSV 2.  This can be done through Quest labs in most states, the code is 34534.
4) no
5) I think it is at least 50-50 that you are really negative.
