Genital Herpes or Not?

I recently went to see a nurse practitioner for a yearly pap. The weekend before, I started feeling pressure as though I had to urinate all the time and only a little would come out. Turns out I had a UTI and she prescribed me with nitrofurantoin (2 a day for 7 days) and a diflucan pill in case I got a yeast infection from the antibiotics. While she was doing my pap she said that everything looked fine. I did a urine and blood test as well. She got the urine sample results back while I was there and told me the one of my kidney levels were reading as if I were diabetic and told me to make sure I ate everyday even if I ate in small portions. (I have the worst diet in the world). Got a phone call from the nurse a week later saying that my bloodwork came back and that I was positive for genital herpes or hsv. I have had no symptoms, no breakouts. or anything other than what I described earlier (UTI). I have had the same partner for 7 years and I have no reason to believe that he has not been faithful (although not impossible). I told him this and reassured me that he has been faithful. He went to the local health department to get tested and his results were negative. Any help? This is really causing problems in my home.

Yes you will need the actual results.

Still have not heard back from the NP with my results. But I spoke with a NP that I used to work for and discussed it with her. She informed me that she has read that herpes tests are most accurate when the person is having symptoms and that blood tests have shown to have little clinical value. My boyfriend (nor I) has not showed any symptoms either and all of his tests came back negative. Possible false positive? What do you think? Probably still need actual results to research?

I agree, you cannot be diagnosed with genital herpes through bloodwork alone. Obtain the full details, what test (IgG or IgM) what type and what levels.

Thanks for responding. I'm waiting on a return call to get all of my results so I can have a copy for myself. Will let you know some time tomorrow if anything.

Hi, this is a very typical situation. First find out what test they did like the igG herpes select and let us know if there was a number score. If its below 3 then most likely a false positive and would need retesting.
