Antibodies of herpes type 1

My gynecologist told me that I had antibodies for Herpes type 1. I have never had Herpes one, at least at lips where they usually form and you can see. How have I gotten it? And when I did sonogram at my genital area everything was normal. However I have not got back other test that I did. Should I be worried for this? Is it a possibility that Herpes type 1 be at my genital area? I am scared!!

Thank you!

50-80% of the U.S. population has antibodies for HSV-1; it's extremely common. Most of the infections are oral, and just over 20% of those with oral HSV-1 are symptomatic or develop obvious cold sores. You really have no need to worry. If you haven't had obvious symptoms yet then you will probably rarely, if ever develop symptoms!

If you haven't noticed anything going on genitally then most likely your infection is oral, and you have no reason to think otherwise.

HSV-1 is spread to genitals most of the time through oral sex. It is unlikely that you have HSV-1 genitally if you have not had any symptoms down there.
