I am a 47 yr old male and I have oral herpes.  I am dating a 41 yr. old woman who has genital herpes.  She was infected at the age of 20 by a boyfriend who had a cold sore outbreak during which he gave her oral sex. What are my risk factors? Since I already have oral herpes am I protected? If I give her oral sex what are my risks?

have you been tested yourself to know if you only have hsv1 orally ? if not, certainly seek out a type specific herpes igg blood test to see what your hsv2 status is to make sure that hsv1 is the only type of herpes you are dealing with in this relationship.

if indeed it is hsv1 genitally that your partner has, it's a non-issue for the two of you for the most part. Your hsv1 oral infection gives you significant protection against contracting hsv1 on other body parts. Err on the side of caution and don't have sex any time she has anything going on genitally but it's really very, very low risk that you'd contract hsv1 genitally from her.

keep asking questions!
