HSV-1 possibility?

To whom this may concern,

So  about 2 weeks ago I experienced itching and burning on the underside of my penis. When I got home and undressed there was visual swelling and redness.I got into the shower, washed my genitals, got out, and put some antibacterial cream on the irritated area. Within the hour, the swelling went completely down but the redness was still there. Early that morning I masturbated with Men's Vaselline "Cooling Hydration" lotion.  It  leaves a minty sensation on your body.  After I masturbated I put on some pretty tight fitting underwear, got dressed and left the house. That afternoon is when the itching started.

I did have sex/oral sex a little over a month ago. Three days after the symptoms occurred, I went to the doctor and got a HSV blood test that came back negative. The doctor told me it usually takes up to 3 months for antibodies to form to bring a positive result. 4 Days after the test (a week after initial irritation) I accidentally used the same lotion and spread it every were, and wore the same kind of underwear. The irritated area began to swell again. I took a shower and put some antibacterial cream on and the swelling went down immediately.

At this timeI advised my most recent sexual partner to go get tested. She got tested and her results came back positive for HSV-1 but negative for HSV-2. The doctor said that from the test results, she has probably had it for a long time. I have to wait another month before I am tested to get definite results.
1) Could she have given me HSV-1on my genitals from oral sex? It was a little over a month between the last time we had any sexual contact and this irritation happened . We kissed all the time and I have never gotten symptoms in my mouth.
2) Was this irritation probably caused by an allergic reaction?
3) Is it common for people to contract HSV-1 on their genitals from people with oral HSV-1?
Any answers to these questions and my situation would be very helpful. Thank you so much.

1.  Yes, she could have given you HSV 1 on the genitals, but your symptoms that resolve pretty quickly with non-herpes stuff don't sound like it.
2.  That's much more likely than herpes.  Some lubricating solutions can be very irritating - one wouldn't think that would be the case, but it sure can be!
3.  Probably most new HSV 1 genitally has to do with receiving oral sex, yes.  And its more common among people age 14-24 than new HSV 2 genitally.

I think your doctor is right on track and is advising you correctly.  Follow that advice and I think you'll be good.  You symptoms don't really sound herpetic to me.

Ok I will. From your professional opinion and from what I have told you. What do you think my chances are of having this disease? Doctor H suggested 1 in 1000. Would you agree with this?

Thank you!

I prefer my patients to have a final HSV test done 16 weeks past exposure for maximum certainty.

Terri,

Do you think it is necessary for me to go get tested again at 12 weeks? With this test coming back negative at 8 weeks, and my symptoms not matching that of herpes, is it necessary or can I put this behind me?

Thank you!

Terri,

I just got another blood test on Tuesday. 8 weeks after possible exposure. Both tests came back negative. I am now confident I do not have HSV. Your words have kept me calm.

Thank you so much for your guidance and help. Your services are a God send.

Thank you!

Again, herpes would not go away within hours of application of a cream.  It usually lasts for days rather than hours.

It is possible that you could have contracted HSV 1 from your partner's mouth, yes, but I would really expect sores in addition to swelling and redness.  The only way you will know for certain is to have a swab test that is positive from the area of irritation.  It would also be suggestive of new infection if you tested positive on an antibody test in 4 months or so from the contact.

Also, The first irritation occurred 5 weeks after last sexual contact. I have not experienced anything even close to a sore or herpetic symptoms during that 5 week span.

I am talking about Herpes. I researched that the symptoms would not go down that quickly if I did have it. Like I said after I took a shower and put some antibacterial cream on the area, the swelling went down almost immediately. The redness was still there but now it is completely healed up. So it went like this: First irritation-Used lotion, itchiness, swelling, took a shower, applied cream, swelling went down immediately, no itchiness, redness was still there. One week later- accidentally used lotion again, swelling and itchiness again, applied cream, swelling went down immediately, redness still there. One week later- completely healed. I never had any flu like symptoms or aches or pains.

Thank you!

To what research/disease state are you referring when you talk about "from your research".  ARe you taking about herpes or drug reactions?

Thank you so much for your speedy response. So even though there was redness that has lasted for quite sometime, and it was a little flaky (looked like dry skin) after the swelling went down and the skin became less raw, it was more likely the case of an allergic reaction? From my research usually the swelling stays for sometime and crater-like ulcers form from it. Is that correct?
