HSV 1 transmission

I am pretty sure I had oral HSV 1 for a while because I have had cold sores.  I was married for 18 years and I don't think I  ever gave it to him genitally.  He may have had oral HSV 1 also.
Recently, I was dating a guy and we kissed, and I used my salvia on my genital.  The next day I noticed he had a big cold sore on his lip.  I proceeded to have a genital outbreak a few days later.  The doctor that examined me said it looked like herpes and she took a swab of the sores.  The test was positive.  Now I am wondering did I really get it genitally, because I have read once you have it orally, you can't get it genitally.  Plus, if I already had it in my mouth then I would have tested positive for HSV 1 and you can't tell where I have it.

I went in today for a culture.  She said more than likely it is hsv2, but the results won't be back till Monday,

if you have a new lesion, be seen today or tomorrow for a lesion culture and typing to find out if you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally.

No, they did not type it.  I am thinking about having a blood test.
I have been thinking more about this and it seems like there are two possibilities, both rare.
1) I got genital hsv 1 even though I think I already had it in my mouth.
2) I got hsv 2 from his mouth.

New news - I discovered this morning a genital lesion, so either I am having a hsv 1 outbreak, even though they are supposed to be rare, or I have hsv 2.  This is the first outbreak since the initial infection at the end of January.
