HSV1 concern

I'm pregnant and concerned about hsv1.  A few years ago I had what may have been a primary outbreak from oral sex.  I haven't had any outbreaks or symptoms since then.  I told this to my new doctor. She thinks I may not have it and isn't concerned unless she sees an outbreak. We'll do an exam at 36 wks to be safe. I've read so much online that talks about outbreaks or viral shedding during labor and delivery. Should I ask for antiviral meds incase I have hsv1 or do I assume we're safe (and hsv1 negative) if no symptoms happen by baby's due date? I'm worried about an outbreak during labor and delivery without us knowing.

I just gotta stop worrying so much.  The bottom line is that regardless of what my results are, I'll be ok.  And the most important thing is that my baby is born healthy. I tell you what though, just going through this whole thing reminds me of how important it is to take care of ourselves.  When we're young, we don't realize the importance of practicing safe sex and being selective of who we are intimate with. I wish somebody would have had the talk with me when I was younger.  I definitely have a different outlook now, and appreciate my body a lot more.

Thanks for the info today Grace!

Blessed:)

no I saw that HHH recommended that you post here for follow up :)

the blood tests are very accurate for hsv2. they still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections but are helpful for most folks.  Gives us a place to start. Hsv1 genitally tends not to reoccur very often and doesn't shed often so it's hard to get a decent lesion culture to confirm if it wasn't able to be gotten the first time.

since hubby is testing negative, contracting hsv1 ( or hsv2 ) genitally during pregnancy isn't an issue for you as HHH had cautioned against in his post to you.  as long as you don't get a recurrence at the time of delivery ( and they check you when in labor to make sure that you don't ), the risk of transmitting the virus to the baby ( if you do have hsv1 genitally ) is less than 1%. Certainly something to keep in mind but not something to be overly worried about.

how many weeks pregnant are you now?

keep asking questions!

p.s.  I apologize if this seemed redundant, I'm not trying to post on both forums, I was only looking for additional opinions.  Sorry for being a pest!

Yes we have.  His results are negative, I'm still waiting on mine.  Are these tests pretty accurate? The doctor doesn't think they are.

I've read your post on HHH's board.

did you and your partner pursue herpes igg blood testing yet?

hsv2 genitally is more of an issue than hsv1 genitally is. I agree with HHH that it doesn't really sound like it was hsv1 genitally going on too. typically people who contract hsv1 genitally have very obvious and very painful symptoms and your symptoms don't sound like they presented that way.
