HSV2 - false positive?

Hoping someone can help me here.

I recently had some 6 or 8 weeks ago a hard lump on my genitals this led to a trip to the doctor and a blood test being ordered.

From this I received confirmation of the following results.

HSV type 1 specific AB, IGG  <0.91
HSV type 2 specific AB, IGG 1.60

I have been with my wife for 6 years and we have practiced unprotected sex.

She tested shortly after my results negative for both HSV 1 and 2.

I have been faithful to her and cannot fathom where i have contracted HSV 2.

She is so very scared and is pushing me away, Is it possible that this could be a false positive.

I have asked my doctor to try and get a BioKit after reading this can help determine, any comments or feedback would be appreciated.

so do you think it's that your wife just doesn't believe that you haven't had other partners or that she just isn't listening to all the facts to know that the odds of you having hsv2 with a low positive initially , a negative biokit and a negative WB are up there with the chances that you'd be the big power ball winner tonight ?

sorry to hear of your ordeal, going through the same thing here.  Had a low positive of 1.26, retested and it was 1.82, took a biokit, negative, a herpes dna blood test negative, Partner is negative and ex is negative.  I dont know what to do but i need to prove this thing one wy or another.  How did you get the WB?

I'm very sorry to hear of the false positive creating distrust between you & your wife. =(
Has she read this post you created?  Grace is an expert in the medical field.
If your wife still doesn't believe it, you can post to Dr. HHH & Hook (STD Expert forum) if she would prefer hearing it from specialists who have over 35+ years of experience in the field of infectious diseases.
Hopefully the Western Blot will ease her fears.  Hope you two can have a good holiday, despite this.

Me again.

Just a quick note on my testing.

Based on everything that I have read and seen i am convinced that I do not have hsv 2 as previously detected in my first test.

Unfortunately my wife is not convinced and is convinced I am positive for hsv and that the antibodies have not developed fully enough to be detected, insisting that I retest.

Noting that the wb I took was for confirmatory reasons I do not believe this necessary but wanted some reassurances.  Equally I would be appreciative to hear from anyone who has gone through this with a spouse and any tips to overcome this.  Our marriage is on the verge of failure and the primary cause is the lack of trust developed by the false positive.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Thanks, and happy holidays ....

Ok so i tracked down somewhere with the Biokit assay from calling the manufactirer.

and the result from the test came back negative.

Thankyou so much for your help, I now need to find a way to convince my wife that there is no more  risk as she does not understand the results.

For those in Texas I found the test at the Community Wellness Clinic in Conroe, Texas,

Thankyou Grace, was just hoping to try and get confirmation quicker.

I will keep searching around and call BioKit tomorrow as well just in case.

the biokit is hard to find. easier for your provider to send off a herpes WB.  If he uses quest labs it's test #34534

Are you a glass half full sort of guy? If so, read Dr. Handsfield's and Hook's posts about low positives. Chances are better than not that you don't have herpes.

As Grace noted, your doctor can order the Western Blot. See her posting above with the proper Quest Diagnostics code.

thankyou for the feedback, i have had previous sexual partners but none since meeting my wife.

I was married previously in a monogomous relationship, so really any other possibility is going back over 10 years.

I have asked my doctor to try and get the BioKit, if he cannot find it how would i go about getting a test.

He was unaware of the BioKit or Sure Vue tests and also said i was HSV1 positive at the time of his diagnosis.

crossing all fingers and toes at the moment and my heart feels for everyone who has gone through the feelings I have now.

You are negative for HSV1. Your HSV2 is a low positive and would need confirmatory testing with a Western Blot or Biokit.

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Herpes/low-positives---confirmatory-results/show/1097724#post_5968138  is  a prior post on low positive hsv2 results that we have ongoing here that contains more information for more reading on why confirming your infection is important with a result that low. I'd encourage you both to read it.

Had you had prior sexual partners? If not, logically you are HSV negative if your wife is. As to a "hard lump", that doesn't typically describe herpes. A swab/culture should have been done if the doctor suspected herpes. But regardless, get the confirmatory test if you've had other sexual partners, and don't be surprised if it's negative.

your hsv2 is a very low positive and is likely a false positive.  you need to follow up on this with additional confirmatory testing. the herpes WB is the preferred test. if your doctor uses quest it's test # 34534.

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Herpes/low-positives---confirmatory-results/show/1097724#post_5968138  is a prior post on this from this forum with more info in.
