HSV2 result question

Four years ago I dated a man, were we only intimate once, I preformed oral sex on him unprotected but not to the point of ejaculation, my jeans were on our genitals never touched. He didn't have any visual symptoms.  We broke up, and recently he emailed me to let me know that he has hsv2 and he had it when we dated, I guess the guilt was building up. I got tested and came back negative for hsv1 (didn't get the exact number) and positive for hsv2 at 1.1.

Should I assume that I have hsv2? I have never had any symptoms, other the occasional UTI,  but my family of mostly girls all gets them from time to time.

Should I retest?

What is the likely that I have HSV2 orally? Does this mean I would have it genitally too?

Thank you for your help.

I know it has been awhile but I wanted to post my new test results in the event that other people find themselves in the same situation that I was (wondering about the possibility of a false positive with a low hsv2 titer and negative for hsv1)

I retested using the biokit method. I was NEGATIVE!!!

In my opinion and from my experience it is a defiantly a great idea to retest. I had to drive 12 hours since the biokit test is not offered in my state, but it was worth the long haul just for the clarification.

Thank you Grace for your help. You are so knowledgeable on this subject, without the information you provided on this website I would have never known about false positives.

Even the best hsv1 blood tests we have still dont' pick up on all hsv1 infections.  You should still confirm a hsv2 igg result if you don't have a + lesion culture for herpes if the igg result is less than 3.5.  Not many 1.1 infections are truly + for hsv2 so at the moment I wouldn't assume you have it anywhere.

Thank you Grace for your reply. We actually never had intercourse, just the 1 time unprotected oral sex that I preformed on him, he did not perform on me. Our genitals never touched.

I have a few more questions (sorry if that is against the rules, I've never posted before)

I thought hsv2 results can only be a false positive if you have hsv1 which I don't. If it is possible that I had a false positive result should I retest?

If it is not a false positive, should I assume that I have hsv2 orally but never had any symptoms, or assume I have it genitally and never had any symptoms?

Your hsv2 igg is just barely positive and is most likely a false positive.  You were very unlikely to contract hsv2 from the man in question from a one time protected encounter and 1 time unprotected oral sex.
