Herpes and babies

Hi Grace. I was wondering when HSV-1 becomes just a cold sore and not a devastating infection for babies? I understand encephalitis can occur in adults, but at what age can an infant be exposed and usually be ok?

This does help. Thank you. I was wondering also... if a child contracted herpes in the eye, would you be able to tell? For instance would there be noticeable sores, or could the virus attack the retina without any noticeable redness, discharge, sores, etc.?

well I've taken care of babies who are 2 weeks old with actual cold sores that didn't progress to any further complications for them. I don't think there is a real set age but typically it's under 6 months of age that contracting hsv1 orally has the most potential to cause additional illness.

hope that helps :)
