This is sad. Herpes virus (typically HSV-1) can be spread by contact with anyone with open sores (i.e. Same as 'cold sores' in mouth), on occassion HSV-2 (the one best known as STD) can also be spread by normal non-sexual contact. This often happens in contact sports, like wrestling, and can cause skin outbreaks anywhere on the body. Contracting viral menengitis is certaining not a sign of any sexual activity or not.
usually recurrences of hsv2 doesn't trigger meningitis. it can , but typically doesn't.
he'll need to ask if his csf was tested for herpes. he can also seek out a type specific herpes igg blood test to see what his status is.

He went to the hospital cause he had a severe headache, light sensitivity, fever, and vomiting. There they did a lumbar puncture and told him he had viral meningitis, and started him on Valtrex, which is an antivirus for herpes.
I haven't had any tests for herpes; I'm a virgin, and thus have never concerned myself with the possibility of an STD.
how was he diagnosed as having herpes meningitis?
