Herpes on finger?

I've known for a while that herpes on the finger is possible.  I had one cold sore on my mouth 12 years ago (not sexually transmitted, as I was a kid) and to my knowledge, I don't have any genital herpes (knock on wood).

This morning I woke up with a really itchy ring finger, right around the tip.  It didn't hurt at all, no "tingling" (other than the itching) and no real redness...it just looks like all my other fingers. To my knowledge I have not had a cut on that finger recently.  I put a band-aid on it just in case.  Anyway, I took the band aid off about 6 hrs later to see how it was progressing, and it looked the same, except now it feels hotter to the touch and itchier if I touch it.  If I go a while without touching it, it gets less itchy.  No sores or anything like that.  And absolutely no pain, even when pressed.

Am I overreacting?  I'm just concerned because I inserted a tampon this morning so I hope I didn't give myself genital herpes too.

Sounds like a little bit of foreign matter got in... splinter? glass hard? and is being ejected.

I'm wondering if its a mosquito bite because when i covered it, it stopped itching and when i itched it more, it itched like crazy.  There also seems to be a hot, hard bump in the tip.

With a long term oral HSV infection you are extremely unlikely to be infected elsewhere, fingers or genital. Typically people working in the medical field including dentists are of any appreciable risk of HSV to the hands.

Most likely this is some minor bump you didn't notice at the time or immune reaction.

I should point out that during the night, i got several mosquito bites...maybe this is a mosquito bite?  It doesn't really look like one, but I also don't know if a mosquito bite would present itself visibly on a finger.
