Herpes recurrence

I got herpes about 20 years ago and it periodically comes back about once every one or two years in the same spot as the initial infection, which is around the vaginal opening but much more mild.
I recently had an outbreak in a totally different spot than usual, which was on labia,  and very strong symptoms.
What does this mean? Did I get reinfected somewhere? Or did it spread?

the reason I ask is, 20 years ago, odds are you just had a visual diagnosis. It's well worth pursing a type specific herpes igg blood test to confirm your status.  You can get it yourself online through a testing company like healthcheckusa.com or tstd.org too. Those both run about $100 for the igg test.  There are some cheaper online places too so it's well worth checking around. you can get type specific igg testing as little as $40 at some draw stations.

if your test only comes back as hsv1+, certainly well worth further work up to confirm that indeed you do have genital herpes.

if you continue to get these more extensive recurrences or they start occurring more frequently, definitely follow up with a provider to make sure it's only herpes going on. BV especially in us gals can cause herpes to be more active and it doesn't always present with odor and discharge.

I went to a clinic when I was first diagnosed during the first outbreak. I've gone a few times during outbreaks and the cultures come out negative but I've never gotten a blood test but I got by the original outbreak. I don't have insurance so I can't go get a blood test to confirm at this point. Why do you ask?

I encourage you to read the herpes handbook. google it. it's free to read online or print out at home.

it's not unusual to have ob's in more than the same location over time.

how were you originally diagnosed 20 years ago? Have you ever had any herpes testing since then?
