Herpes

My exgirlfriend had herpes. I knew before hand that she did. I tested negative before the relationship started. She definitly had it has her numbers were over 5 for both hsv-1 and 2 with the herpeselect. She was on valtrex and we did not use condoms. I know stupid. I know I need to test after 3 months. Is it possible I still don't have it? If my test comes back negative after 3 months should i be confident I don't have it? Ive read its possible to have it and not test positive on the blood test.

There is an excellent change that you don't have it!  I would wait 4 months from your last sexual contact to get tested.  If you test negative at that time, yes, I would recommend that you let it go.  It would be quite unusual to test negative and be infected.  The tests now are very good, though not 100% perfect.

Oh and I forgot to mention we had unprotected sex for about 5 months. Just wondering if my test comes back negative if I should let it go and if its possible I don't have it.

Yes, I saw that.  There is about a 4% risk of getting infected in a year's time of having sex without condoms twice a week if a female is infected and her male partner isn't.  Was she taking daily antiviral therapy?  If yes, then the risk is about 2%, even lower.

Im not sure if she took it every day. I know she was supposed too. She had an outbreak of some sort shortly after the first time we were together on her thigh. Her doctor said it wasn't herpes but I wanted her to get tested and I got tested too. Her results were positive and for 1 and 2 both over 5 with the herpeselect. I was negative for both. Ive always worried though that she got this from me and that I'm one of the ones that doesn't show positive on the test. I've never had typical symptoms that I know of. Now that were broke up and If I still test negative I worry that I won't trust the results and have to inform future partners. Am I being irrational about this? If I test negative after 4 months should I trust the results?

The thing on her thigh could most certainly have been herpes, thigh outbreaks are common, but mostly as a recurrence, not a first episode.  How soon after you first had sex did she test positive with a value greater than 5?

If you test negative again at 4 months, you need to believe the results and move on with your life.

She tested positive over 4 or 5 a lil after 6 weeks of being together.

Hard to say about that result after you'd been together for 6 weeks.  The test done at 4 months post last exposure will be more useful.

Hi there, i was just reading your post where you mentioned that a female with genital herpes has about 4% chance of infecting her partner in a year without using protection! I never realised the chances were so low! What about when a male is infected what are the chances of infecting his partner over a year? Is the risk much higher then?

This information would be really helpful to me!
Thanks! :)

Hello confused.  The risk for male to female herpes infection is higher.  It is higher for all STDs.  I got herpes from somebody who I had sex with 3 times.  I've only had sex less than 20 times in my whole life and I contracted herpes type 2.  It only takes one time.

Hello

Im sorry to here that :(
Im waiting on results to see if my symptoms was just a bladder infection, as i have never had any signs of sores or sore groins or any other syptoms of herpes, except ive read that UTI's can be mistaken for herpes witch i found very surprising!
I have had coldsores etc before so im really not to sure on my chances here. Just hoping that it does turn out positive for a UTI. But if it is herpes its not really the end of the world right, concidering ive never had a outbreak or anything my virus must be pretty tame, i hope :S

Thanks for ur reply! :)

Hey confused.  As far as I know, UTI's and herpes should not be confused.  A UTI is really painful sharp pain, it hurts to urinate.  Herpes would be more blisters down there (however it is usually asymtomatic 80% of the time).  They do not have similar symptoms.  Plus, a UTI is bacterial, when bacteria gets caught in your urinary tract, and herpes is viral.

Did you get an IgG blood test?  If you have cold sores, you will show up positive for Herpes Type 1 most likely.  That's oral though, it's not as big a deal.

Even if you test positive for herpes antibodies of either type it probably doesn't explain your problem.

Take care and good luck on the test and figuring out what is causing your symptoms.

Exactly, thats what i had thought until i started reading up on the net!
I have not had a blood test yet as i am still waiting on my urine results to confirm a bladder infection or not. If i dont get answers from that then STD checks are the next thing.

Thanks for the advice my mind is starting to clear a bit :)

Herpetic urethritis and bacterial UTI are very frequently confused!  They both cause pain with urination and both can cause white cells to be detected in a urine dip.  Both cause pain with urination.  However, with a bacterial infection, bacteria grown in the culture but not with herpetic urethritis.

Sorry everybody for my misinformation.  I didn't know about herpetic urethritis!  Confused I would encourage you to get the screened for STDs including Herpes so that you know your status.  Ok good luck and I really hope you get a negative result.

And also when i have symptoms of burning at the end of urination and frequent urination it only last approx a day or even a few hours, is this the kind of behaviour of herpetic urethritis? My symptoms get better when i drink alot of water and urinate alot. Would this help hepres symptoms also?
