yes you can contract herpes orally from performing oral sex on someone infected. Is it likely to happen? no it is not.

also just to clarify, indeed lambskin condoms should not be used for std protection, non-latex options other than lambskin are protective.   Overall condoms aren't 100% protection against herpes , hpv and syphilis infection but they do help so they should be considered to help protect against all std's.

Simply stated - yes. Both HSV1 & HSV2 can infect upper and lower regions. There is so much more to this though than the straight answer. I've been doing my "homework" on HSV1 & 2 for several days now... "Google" everything you can in HSV1 & 2... Watch out for what you read though - stick to the most current sources of information, as new information is always being added. I wouldn't go to much further back beyond 2008-9. Also, I've read a lot of people saying that either HSV types cannot be transmitted unless you have an active outbreak/flare. This is NOT true. While the chance of contracting or transferring is higher during an outbreak, transmission and transference can happen at almost any time that no signs are present, due to "virus shedding." When this happens, there are not always symptoms/signs present. When in doubt, protect... But remember that even using condoms does not protect 100% against the transmission. Non latex condoms (lambskin, etc) provide NO protection against the virus. I hope this helps... Do your homework :) I'm still researching myself!

***Info gathered through various "newer" websites and CDC.
