Hi Massagefan - it is NEVER zero risk. First, it's important to remember that HSV can be contagious even without symptoms. However, the non-infected partner would need to have a portal (cut, wound, tear, abrasion) in their hand to allow the virus entry. This is how many medical professionals, such as dentists, acquire herpes whitlow (herpes of the hands) when they are not wearing gloves. The caveat is that HSV-2 is not easy to acquire above the waist, so the risk is likely very small, and most herpes whitlow is due to HSV-1. However, quite a few members of our national support group do have HSV-2 above the waist. Statistics are meaningless in cases of transmission in my opinion, because all it takes is one time to be on the other side of the statistic, to transmit. Therefore it's always important to disclose our H status, before every sexual contact.
