HSV-1 genitally

So I recently had my first outbreak last week a couple days after hooking up with my new partner. I went to the doctor and got one of the lesions swabbed and it tested positive for HSV-1 and negative for HSV-2. I know my partner is positive for HSV-1, but he says he has only had it as cold sores on his mouth and hasn't had one in a very long time. Also, he did not perform oral sex on me. I am just so confused as to how I got this on my genitals. The only thing I can think of, and this my be TMI, but he used his spit as lubrication when we were hooking up. Is it possible it spread that way? Also, is it possible for me to spread HSV-1 to him genitally now even though he already has it but gets it as cold sores?

Once an infection is established it is rare to infect other parts of the body. Some oeople get it in both places at the same time.
I know this is all confusing and not a lot of time has been spent studying this.

So most likely he gave it to me through his saliva as lubrication or he is just infected both orally/genitally?

Hi, the likely hood is that he has hsv1 genital also as using saliva would not be the likely culpret in spreading it.

Is it possible for him to have HSV-1 both orally and genitally??
The reason I am so confused about this is because I read that if you have it HSV orally, you can't have it genitally as well. I don't know how true this is though.
