ghsv1 transmission with no outbreaks?

Hello Terri,

I've done some searching on these forums for some answers and can't seem to find one that answers my question.  A girl I've been dating recently let me know that she has ghsv 1 and I wanted to get more information on the virus.  I've had a hsv blood test done and I'm neg for both hsv 1 and hsv 2. I read a few posts in which you stated that genital to genital hsv 1 transmission is low BUT possible. If she hasn't had an outbreak in 2-3 years does the probability significantly drop? She also doesn't take suppression medication. If we do decide to become sexually active, are the same precautions (condom, suppressives) recommended? If not, what is suitable/possible. Even though you mentioned that there isn't much research available on genital to genital hsv1 transmission, any insight would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to commend you on the amount of time you commit to helping and answering questions on the forums. Thanks

Hi Grace, you said hsv1 genitally on average only sheds about 3% of days. What is the % like for hsv2?

Thanks again. I will probably post in the doctor section as well due to the fact that I have a related question.

will gladly respond :)

hsv1 genitally on average only sheds about 3% of days. this comes out to less than a dozen days out of the year. the odds of having sex on one of those days is pretty low.

will daily suppressive therapy protect you from genital hsv1 ? we have no idea. It doesn't shed enough to make it feasible to do the same studies we have done with hsv2.  It won't hurt but whether it provides enough bang for your buck to make it worth the cost and effort is up to you and your partner.

also discuss if you want to utilize barrier protection for oral sex too ( both giving and receiving ). without obvious cold sores no easy way to know if she also contracted hsv1 orally or not so it's totally up to the two of you whether you want to err on the side of caution or not.

keep asking questions!

Sorry about that Grace. The question was actually for you. It was late and I saw Terri's name on the sidebar as I typed. Any insight? Thanks again
