Just diagnosed

My ex fiance just recently had an affair with a woman that has herpes and transmited it to me. I was just diagnosed one week ago and have been taking Zovirax since then. In search of comfort and company a friend spent the night at my house and we ended up having sex. He wore a condom but it slipped out and he penetrated twice before we noticed. How high is the risk of him being infected because of this? We both don't know much about this condition and were wondering if it is safe for him to masturbate me. Is finger vaginal penetration safe?

odds are since this is a newly acquired infection for you, you are still actively shedding the virus. avoiding all sexual contact at this point was probably wise to be honest.

at this point nothing you can do. should your partner notice any symptoms on his hands or genitals, he should be seen promptly for a proper diagnosis.

the herpes handbook is a free resource for more info - www.westoverheights.com is the website it is on. There is also a terrific patient counseling video on the site too to watch.

what testing have you had done for herpes? do you have hsv1 or hsv2?

I have only had blood work done. I never had any sores or abrations. I did have discomfort itching and swelling and a white discharge. So when I got tested all my doctor did was tell me I was possitive for herpes and started me on medication. She didn't explain to me which one. Actually I didn't even know there were different ones untill I came to this website. Do you think I should re test?

Shortly after my last comment I called my Dr. She told me I had herpes symplex 2. I also asked her about my incident with the condom slipping out and she said I should not have to worry my self so much since I am being treated the chances are 1 or 2 percent that I would spread it. She also told me to make sure that I had no sexual contact if I had any simptoms of an outbreak or think I might be getting one. She said to make sure my partner and I were always protected though and make sure that he checks him self for any signs just in case. If you have an opposing view please feel free to comment, I'm open to different opinions.

please call again tomorrow and ask for your test results. write them down so you can post them here. All I need to see are the actual numeric results - e.g. hsv1 igg 4.3 and hsv2 igg 5.6 or whatever they are. that way we can be sure you were properly tested and don't need further confirmatory testing done.

did they test you for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally when you had your swelling and discharge ?

I called my Dr. and she gave me the following results HSV1 igg less than 0.91, HSV2 igg 2.94. I did have urine and a pap smear done. PAP came back normal and urine showed slight trace of blood, but she said they did not find any signs of bacteria growing.

your hsv2 igg is a low positive one. your provider didn't see any lesions suggestive of herpes on your cervix or anything? was it just a routine exam for you or did you go because of the discharge?

also how long prior to that had you last had sex with your now ex bf? has he had testing to know his own hsv2 status?

When I went for my exam I scheduled it because the woman that my ex was seing adviced me that she had an STD and that he did not wear protection. As I was having the examination done my Dr. said there was nothing suggestive so I had to wait for blood work. My ex has not been tested because frankly he does not care. He did how ever show signs of herpes, the blisters, itching and painful urination, flu like symptoms. I definatelly went though because I had the discharge, itching and discomfort and found out she had somethin. The last time I had sex with my ex bf was a day or two before I started to have the symptoms I described. No more contact after that. Also, what does low possitive mean?

at this point wait until it's been at least 3 or 4 months since you last had sex with your partner and repeat your herpes igg blood test and see what it shows.  should you get a return of discharge or any obvious lesions, be seen promptly for a lesion culture and typing to confirm your infection.  low positives have a chance of being falsely positive and need additional testing but since you were tested early , repeating the testing you had done later on is the easiest next step.

you also have to repeat all of your std testing since it was done far too early after you had last had sex with your ex partner. do it all when you repeat your herpes testing.

I did mention to my Dr. that I would like to be re tested in the future and she said there was no need because the results where clear. Not that I'm getting my hopes up but to make it clear, are you saying that there could be a possibility that it may not be a possitive and it could be something else? In any case I do think you have a point about being tested too early and I feel that I should re test in a couple of months. My ex had sex with this woman for a week as far as I'm concerned before we had sex one time, then he was with her for another week before I found out what was going on. There was no more contact between him and I the whole time exept for that one time.

have you ever been tested for herpes before this?

your provider is probably unaware of the low positive issues with the testing.  There is a terrific herpes testing toolkit from the ashastd.org website that is under $3 if you'd like to enlighten her - http://www.ashastdwebstore.org/herpes-testing-toolkit.html   you could consider it an early xmas present for them :)

Grace there is one more question that escaped my mind. Being that I have a low possitive should I still keep taking the medication? Or wait until I have a confirmation? Like I said before my symptoms were more similar to a yeast infection than to herpes.

no reason to continue taking acyclovir at this point. you've had no symptoms and you have a low positive that needs further confirmation.

Hi Grace,
I went to my PCP today looking for more information on my HSV2 low possitive results. I don't know if I got the right information or if I'm more confused now. My PCP told me that although my IGGs came up possitve my IGMs came up negative. He said that means that I have been infected for a while now and this is not a recent exposure. He also said that I have never had symptoms because I am asymptomatic and more than likely will never show symptoms. This kind of made sence because my ex met this woman he was just recently with back in March. So I guess I can assume that they had been sexually active for this long and not just for the recent two weeks like he claims. Does this make sence? He also said it was up to me if I wanted to keep taking the medication but he did advice I should keep taking it if I was going to be sexually active.

your provider is not up to date on the low positive issues with the igg herpes tests. follow up as I suggested because you have been given erroneous information.

only 20% of folks who have hsv2 are truly asymptomatic. you could be one of them but you need to confirm your status properly.  At this point waiting until the right time has passed to repeat your testing is the next step.

Thanks Grace, I will follow through with further testing in a couple of months. I really wish these doctors around here would educate them selves about low possitives because they seem to look at me like I don't know what I'm talking about.

Hi Grace, I have a question that has been bugging me for a few days. My friend and I have been having occational sex(3 times to be exact). Everytime there has been an accident with the condom. The first two times the condom slipped out. The last time(3 days ago) the condom broke at the tip. My friend has been recently tested for herpes and he is negative so we are trying to be careful so he wont contract it. He has not had any symptoms thus far. My question is, what are the chances that he could have been infected with our mishaps with the condoms? Each time we tried a different kind and I'm starting to think it's a sign that we should not be doing this lol. Silly I know...

it's still low risk though really he needs to learn how to buy a condom that fits properly and how to use them a little better :)

Thanks Grace. LOL I do think he is buying the wrong size. So as long as he is not having any symptoms he should be ok, right?

I wouldn' t be too worried since you don't even know if you have hsv2 or not for sure. has he had full std testing to know his status?

He went trhrough the same situation I did about 7 months ago. His wife of eleven years cheated on him so he got a full screen 2 months ago. His HSV1 came up at 0.90 and HSV2 at 0.61.
